Hullo Lindsay, I am just so amazed at how wonderful you can make stickers look so beautiful! I have cursed thistles on many occasions when I went hiking or hunting as a younger man. I have seen their beauty, but the aggravation associated with them made them a subject that I have never bothered to explore, thank you for creating an enlightening picture! I have attempted a thistle drawing in color pencils, I believe that it is fine, nothing exceptional, but a subject that I never even considered before seeing your art, thank you! I believe that Sarah Burns uses the Stillman books for her traveling gouache adventures. I am unsure of the tan papers in her books, yet it looks similar if not exactly like your book! I hope you enjoy creating more art in this book. Gouache or mixing your mediums again! Please take care, be safe and have yourself a lovely day!

I like the way art has evolved through the years. Styles have changed and each artist seems to have his or her own, unlike many of the old masters who tried to copy each other's style and technique because it was the most popular.

My favorite sketchbook! I like your result here! I think mixed media is fun on this paper. I love it for drawing and gouache. Drawing with ink and white posca pen is probably my favorite. Gouache looks amazing on any toned paper..it just pops off the surface (but if using in this sketchbook I would not dilute it much, because the paper doesn't like water). Drawing with watercolor pencils works pretty good too, keeping in mind the undertone will be beige not white, so the colors won't look as vibrant.

To be honest- the Stillman x Birn Nova series got me to love tanned tone paper. I enjoy mix media on the Stillman x Birn, but also the Strathmore tan paper now. The paper looks like it's flimsy, but it handles my style of layering with light washes to thicker strokes quite well! It also takes Mungyo Oil Pastels. I love how your thistle turned out, and that Stillman x Birn's nova papers are getting more appreciation for what it can do :)

I like the way you think! Using paper you don’t like that much is really freeing. I think the fear of "wasting" the things you like or the expensive stuff really can hold someone (coughMEcough) back. I tend to play and use my cheaper student grade watercolor paints more, even though I have artist grade paints. A habit I am forever trying to combat. I would like to think I’ve gotten better at it 😅

I hardly ever hear anyone mention the NeoArt crayons by Caran d’Ache. I came across them by chance on Ebay and they are supposed to be the artist grade version of Neocolor II (Caran d’Ache sell the Neo II as a craft rather than artist product, although they are very lightfast - though Neo II has since been reformulated to be more artist grade when the NeoArt was discontinued). They are very interesting as they are chonkers compared to the other Caran d’Ache crayons! Wonder if you ever used them! Have a 15 box of them so they definitely exist and I didn’t dream them, haha

Last Sunday I saw a hummingbird drinking from a thistle while I was sitting at an overlook to Lake Erie which was flat as glass. It was so pretty and I was wondering how the thistle could be done since I'm sure I've seen you do hummingbirds and water. I might be able to get something sketched out from this. And just an idea for the stickers, could you use a marker in a shadow color or the background color it would be going onto instead of fussy cutting? It might be easier in a pinch. This turned out really pretty. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed it.
