FIRE sued on behalf of four Eastpointe, Michigan citizens Mayor Monique Owens silenced during city council meetings - a clear violation of their First Amendment rights.
Today, we’re happy to announce a settlement in this case, which represents a victory for these citizens, and for free speech.
First, the city will be under a consent decree, which is a court order banning Eastpointe from silencing commentary about elected officials going forward.
Second, our four plaintiffs are getting $17,910.00-a number with a lot of significance, because 1791 is the year the founders ratified the First Amendment.
Third, Eastpointe’s City Council is passing a resolution apologizing to our clients for violating their First Amendment rights.
And finally, Eastpointe is designating September 6 - the anniversary of the mayor’s shout down - as First Amendment Day.
That’s what we call progress. First Amendment rights are the bedrock of our democracy, and FIRE will always be there to defend them.
