Couldn’t agree with you more, I live in a rural area in New York and we have separate EMS and Fire. I’ll tell you right now that there is absolutely no need for FD on about 95% of our calls. Only time FD is dispatched with us is if we request them or if it is a car accident (the FD is required for extrication). It’s such a huge waste of taxpayer money to send FD to EMS calls and yet people are ok with it because they think our firefighters are medical personnel. Here they are not, they have no medical training, I have no fire training, so I help them when they need it, and they help me when I need it. Saves tons of money.

They send the engine out as a first responder and assistance unit. Most larger cities A) contract a private company for EMS, B) have their own EMS which MAY or MAY NOT be sufficient to cover the city, or C) a combination of the 2. Most larger cities and private units also only have 2 people per ambulance. The engine goes because they can usually be there faster, and 2 people are NOT sufficient to run a call. My department is lucky enough to have a minimum of 3 on the ambulance, oftentimes 4, as well as a paramedic first responder (in an SUV, not an engine), as well as police on scene that we can use to our advantage. Unfortunately, most agencies can not say the same.

Sadly both these services are being hit with cuts and arrival times suffer. There are many videos on KZitem showing the hard job the crews have trying to maintain the service. Small town stations are being closed yet the trucks don't get any faster, so response times suffer again.

Coming from Canada and Ireland which use smaller trucks and Medic specialist units including Motorbikes is a much more modern and useful use of equipment leaving Fire engines /Pumper or ladders to respond to what they were designed to do- fight Fires. Excepted- fire halls respond to a larger amount of medical calls than fires and that fire departments have paramedics as firefighter dual role, this now turns into a competition as to who gets there first. Example man has a heart attack in the home - response 2 fire trucks 1suppervisor from both fire and ambulance + 2 ambulances. talk about overkill !!!

Fire trucks always get to the scene first, people move out of the way for them, ambulances look like an electricians van.

@@bryancaughey7507 don't need more than two medics people on 99% of medical calls. Nor do you need rescue equipment on 99% of medical calls. I can understand sending fire to a scene when an ambulance is unavailable, but sending them to each one is a waste of recourses. Many towns do it to justify having a full time fire department because call volume for fire calls are so low. As for having a fire truck serve as an "escort" for the ambulance, that is complete BS. If someone isn't gonna move for an ambulance, they aren't gonna move for a firetruck either. That's coming from many years of experience. It saves no time and research shows it is actually more dangerous for the vehicle following the escort. Much more professional to let the medics handle the medical calls and the firemen to handle the fire calls. Nothing will raise blood pressure and heart rate like hearing a firetruck, ambulance, and police cars come barrelling down the street and having 15 people crowd into your house and make sure the entire neighborhood knows u just called 911

@@MegaSAMBOT2000 Both our comments make valid points. On strictly medical calls, you don’t need more than a van. But that department was worried about loosing a front line engine for the rest of the calls they get (Fire / rescue). Where I’m from only ambulance crews are allowed to take patients to the hospital, but first hand I see again an again a firetruck with a first responder getting there first. Why...maybe more firetrucks? Ambulances have more work to do and are not necessarily the closest to an incident when a call comes in. Our city 20 years ago tried to combine the two departments (ambulance service with the fire crews - it was a disaster, constant bickering over which one was more important and should get the new equipment), eventually my city reinstated the two services as separate but under one overall management department. Now ambulance crews have their own stations separate from the fire crew again. I think that happens more times than not, fire crews and ambulance crews are each absolutely certain what they do is more important than the other. So it seems like the best thing to do is have a separate ambulance service caring for the medical needs and have the fire service focus only on fire and rescue (hazmat/vehicle extraction/water rescue/fire fighting & rescue from fire/fire investigations...). I appreciate your comments, Thank-You.

I HAVE SAID THIS many times to people and I will say it again. While I support firefighters being trained and being equipped for EMS calls, there should be THREE separate agencies in a city sized emergency management system. A Fire Department, A EMS Department, and a Rescue Department. FD handles all fire related calls. EMS handles all medical related calls. The RD handles all vehicle accidents and extrications, Heavy Rescue, Rope Rescues, Water Rescues, FAST Team assignments, Confined Space Rescues, and Fire Police (traffic control on fire scenes and accidents). When you combine these functions, big ego's and unions cause problems. Should be simple enough to identify where all the calls are and places all unit housing in those parts of the city to lessen response times. And before anyone questions my credentials, I have many years in the fire service under incident command.
