The thing that pisses me off about Mazda not making performance cars is how well their "standard" car actually drives. Then again tbh I wouldn't need anything more than the 2.5 manual hatch. Most amazing thing I've noticed in the new Mazda 3 is it feels like there is no nose dive under braking. When you brake hard, from the outside it looks like there could be dive. But in the inside it feels as flat as a board. Its quite incredible. I read that they put a lot of effort to tune the suspension to eliminate dive. The fact that they put so much effort into something no one cares about makes me appreciate them more. Of course these small details dont help them sell cars...

You should be able to say that about every car on the market, considering they're all the result of a serious design process, but sadly it's just not true about most companies/vehicles (or any other product, for that matter). In spite of what Paul said, Mazda did indeed fit a turbo to their trusty 2.5 and called it good. To me that's not a bad thing because the normal 3 (at least in hatch form, no idea about the sedan) is already a relatively flat cornering, stiffly sprung car...and only needs better tires, not an annoying "race car woooo!" suspension tune that shakes your fillings loose and blurs your vision in daily commuting. In spite of the fact Mazda made a mistake going away from independent multilink rear suspension, I've owned a 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch (dark gray with red leather, awesome😎) for just over a year now. As soon as I ditched the stock tires for Pilot Sports, cornering is no longer an issue, and the limits were already pretty high on the crappy rubber. No regrets, and there is no question my overall cost of ownership will be much lower than a Golf R. I really wanted a Hyundai Elantra GT N, but the dealerships around here are abysmal, and the only one who had an N in stock practically wanted me to commit to buying the thing before they would even let me test drive. Watching this video I keep saying to myself that everything these two guys are saying is subjective. What they bash the VW for are things I personally like, what they love about the Mazda, I dislike, I mean, that's the thing. Everything is subjective. So buy what you like and enjoy it, and don't have people like these two guys to sway you either way. Buy what you like, enjoy it, and take care of it 😎👍

Good points. Personally, though, I enjoy reviewers’ opinions, especially when I know what they prefer compared to me. For example, I really enjoy Alex on Autos even though I almost always prefer different cars then him, or like cars for different reasons. But like you said ‘buy what you like’.

The difference is that reviewers drive hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicles, and the average person doesn't. So their "subjective" reviews and opinions carry a bit more weight. They were split on this pair of cars but they were very close. If you enjoy hooning and care less about ride comfort and luxury, go with the VW.

@@OMGWTFLOLSMH well i will agree to disagree with you. People don't need to drive many different cars to have a fair opinion mainly due to bias from sponsors and the need to push a brand because of it. Car enthusiast read up on cars probably more than most so called professionals and know more of the technical stuff. To me you say you want luxory to get the Mazda? Why?? they have a cheap interior to me..I have been in both of these cars (Golf R's/ Mazda Turbo Hatch) i feel the GTI/R feels more premium than the Mazda. All of this of course it's just personal opinion on what one likes over another. Get a hot hatch legend like the VW or get an Asian copycat? Again personal preference. I have never personally owned a Mazda but have been in them. Just open and close the doors on the VW feels solid and secure where the Mazda feels like a tin can. It's just little things like this that make a good car great and others just average. To each their own😎

While I know the Veloster N is FWD I wanna know how it compares. Because when I think of hot hatches in todays market I think of ether a younger crowd or someone's other fun car. As a daily I can see the Golf R & Speed 3 being a good choice of car, but BUT with the 2020 Veloster N shooting down in price in the low 20's in some cases I think that be my choice in fun car.
@davebrochu
3 жыл бұрын
The Veloster N is a completely different character to these cars, it's hard, loud, and the interior is terrible. My buddy bought one new and I picked up a mk7.5 Golf R manual shortly after and they were very different beasts. After kicking both of them around some back roads I would say the Veloster is a better driver's car but the Golf is a better overall car. The Veloster steering feels better, the power is more immediate, the car is more "on". The Golf is no slouch and everything you touch and see is just so much nicer, the refinement is leaps and bounds better and the AWD really helps it on a track too. I wish I could drive a CTR because I bet it's better than both of them.

The annoying thing about the HP and torque is that I can't freaking find 93 octane anywhere near me. I can find 100 octane (go figure), but then I need to do some calculamations to mix 100 and 91 to get the equivalent of 93. I wonder if the ECM still outputs 227 with 91 octane or if it gives us something in between the 250 and 227. Because that would suck for folks like me who don't have a station nearby with 93 grade fuel.

TL/DR -- IF you are a car enthusiast that wants a fun, highly tunable car with tremendous potential -- go for the Golf R. It's a fantastic daily driver and badass backroad hot hatch. Here comes the "R"amble or maybe it's a "R"ant... I have owned two MkVII Golf R's. First one I leased off the showroom floor in Tornado Red - 6spd and I LOVED IT! It was the first "fun car" I had ever bought for myself and I adored it. Alas life forced me to sell it since I was buying a new home and needed to improve my cash flow. About a year or so after moving into my new home I started looking for a Golf R again but this time I planned to buy one gently used. Found a 2017 model in 2018. Single owner. 6spd. Black. DCC. 4,200 miles. Picked it up for $32k and rolled home..... IN LOVE AGAIN!!! I'd say one of the best reasons to buy a MkVII or 7.5 is there is a MASSIVE aftermarket. If you want to autocross this car -- you can do it. If you are a track rat -- you can do it. If you just want to attack backroads -- you can DO IT! I've been keeping my mods light and I'm not doing any autocross or track events (yet...maybe). Everything I've done is focused on having super fun on the streets and especially the mountain back roads. Got some Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires last summer in a slightly wider setup at 245 vs. the stock 235. The PS4S tires are SOOooo much better than the stock Conti all seasons by a massive amount. Worth every penny. I have the Integrated Engineering Stage 1 low torque tune to preserve the stock clutch for as long as possible. This simple $450 tune from IE is also worth every penny and seriously the most bang for your buck of any upgrade on this car. I installed the (mountune) M52 CAI myself for improved engine sound, slight boost in response and so I could learn how to physically work on my car. Then I got the GoFastBits DV+ (diverter valve) which was another learning experience for me plus I do get a nice improvement in throttle response/control and BLOW OFF NOISES!! WOOSH fvvvv fvvvv phvvv!!!! I got a used Burger Motorsport Pedal Tuner box. This nifty device remaps the electronic accelerator pedal. I really like this 5minute mod as it eliminates the minor dead spot at the top of the gas pedal and I can really fine tune the pedal feel just to where I like it for my foot. My next mod is the Diesel Geek short shift kit to improve the 6spd shifting feel in this car. While I'm in there I'm going to also remove the limiter in the clutch valve which causes a little bit of spongy feel in the pedal response. After all that I'm going to focus on improving the handling characteristics of the car. I will first get a front strut tower brace - super affordable and all those who have done it talk about excellent improvements to steering and front end feel. Then another inexpensive mod, an uprated rear sway bar with custom endlinks. I might do a rear strut brace too but I like having ALL my truck space when I drop the rear seats to accommodate big items. Dogbone mount upgrades, deadset kit and replace bushing with machined and poly pieces. Likely my handling upgrades will end with the Bilstein BC16 DampTronic Coilover setup that maintains my stock DCC adjustability.

Mazda dumbed it down because vast majority of American drivers don’t like quick steering. They equate quick steering with twitchiness. Combined with Mazda’s move up market, they made conscious decision to put slower steering rack in the updated 3. I hope they correct that since most people are buying CUV/SUV now. With CX-30 and CX-5 in their line up, I’m hoping they put the fun back in the 3. Fun and premium don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

@@simonburkeisable to Mazda's own admission this isn't a ™Hot" hatch. it has a traditional automatic transmission for goodness sakes. The only reason the Mazda has any street cred at all is because of the turbocharged engine. In America the gulf R would be the only other car that is a hatch with AWD. But these 2 cars audiences are completely different. I don't think anyone looking to buy a gold bar would cross shop a Mazda hatchback no one that I know anyway. In Europe though there's tons of competition. Hatchbacks just have never been huge in the United States for some weird reason. I still think the golf GTI is the best bargain for a hot hatch in the United States unless you want to consider a Civic sport hatchback but they are not an attractive car just like this Mazda. That is subjective though now isn't it what you like I may not like and what I like you may not like that's just how emotional cars are to people.
