Mazhott was founded around 2008 when Rashwan Zaza (guitar and vocals) and Dani Shukri (drums and backing vocals) were jamming in their friend's studio. Rashwan has been thinking about starting an Arabic speaking punk rock band for some time and wrote a couple of songs with Arabic lyrics, so he introduced them to Dani who was immediately excited about the idea. They came up with the name immediately. "Mazhott" means "diesel" in spoken Arabic of Damascus; it was chosen because it's a funny word in the spoken Arabic of Syria, and it is a very unusual name for a band.
Then they needed a bass player, so they hit up a friend asking him if he knew anyone who would fit, and that's how Kareem Kouzbari joined.
After a few months, Rashwan wrote some more songs, and the band needed a second guitarist; Kareem introduced Akram Darkashli, who was his friend and band mate in another project, and Mazhott in its current formation was set for the show.
They played their first show in 2009, in a theater located in the old city of Damascus, called "Dar Al Funoon", where they played all their originals and a few covers, and it was an unexpected success with more people attending than the theater would take in.
