Norman, the problem is that you’re not listening to Tango In The Night at high enough volume levels. The 80s production values should tickle the chest hairs, as Lindsay artistically intended. Only then can you grasp how objectively great this record is. 👍

Mazzy! So I was stoned last night, thinking about records (as one does) and then I began to think about the VC and/or general music KZitemrs like you, Steve Westman… Parlogram… Elliot Roberts… and the types of videos that are being made - and it struck me! You should do a video on BACK covers of records! Or course, we’ve seen a zillion videos on the greatest album covers of all time, “my favorite album covers,” etc., etc., but no one focuses on the back covers! Someone actually put design work into those too, even the purely informational ones. You could really make a lil’ miniseries out of it - give it a snazzy name of some kind like “The Back Story with Mazzy” or some sh*t, and do a ~20 minute video on a back cover of the week. You could cover truly iconic and well-designed back covers like Abbey Road and the fonts, choices of imagery, even the record label logos and who released the album or the history of that label’s logo design, the overall composition of the back cover, or if there’s some hippy-dippy blurb about the band’s spiritual advisor or how this music was handed down from the galactic spirits of peace and love or something… you could talk about the designer of the back cover, if the band had involvement, who the photographer was (if applicable) etc. (if these things can be researched and found out, of course). And then you could also do some episodes kind of having fun with a batch of “purely informational” ones, like the kind that just tell you how wonderful and incredible K-Tel’s roster of albums is 😂 Or or or! The kind that have bogus and/or faulty information on the back, whether it be typos or mistakes, or messages that the label put on to try to sell you on their new flashy equipment (like “this record should only be played on the finest Acme Co. turntables with our latest ultra super fine-tuned Stylus-O-Magic 6000, blah blah I dunno 😂). Point is, I think there’s a series of some kind here! Make it so! 😊🙏🏻 /end of pitch

@@h.markhorton8188 My thoughts exactly! Let’s explore all of the little fun things having to do with vinyl. I mean, someone had to sit down and literally design every back cover you’ve ever seen, and every printed inner sleeve you’ve ever seen. You could have a lot of fun going through these sorts of things in a video series or coffee table book!

Perhaps part of my identity. There is Electric Ladyland, Cheap Thrills, Jean Sibelius Piano Music, The Band, Sam Cooke (Portrait Of A Legend), Love Forever Changes (50th Anniversary Edition). Norman, THANK YOU for the love you give here to songs on Soap Opera. I've said many of the same things since buying this when it came out. Listening to the power of a track like Can't Stop The Music, it's impossible not to believe this is Ray Davies stepping out of character and shouting his heart out, and telling his own back story of heartbreaks. I didn't care much for either of the Preservation LP's or Schoolboys, but Soap Opera is a gem from the band's theatrical period. I don't think there's a mediocre song on it.

There's a Brian Wilson documentary that I watched last month. Its a "newer" one that was made by a writer who Brian began to trust after several different interviews and articles that he had written about Brian. There's a part in it where they are driving around and Brian looks a little lost in thought and confused, and he says "Play 15 big ones." And then he will hear a song and get lost in thought, and hit the stop button. Then after a little bit, "Put 15 big ones back in." I wish i could remember the song off of it that he kept wanting to hear. They were talking about Carl if I remember right.

Your humour is read by me but then much of that isn't too far off UK humour that can pass over some Americans often howling with laughter this side of the screen. Tango In The Night to me is an okay record, pleasant, some stand out songs but it just washes over you not helped by the production (and for some over exposure on the radio). What I have heard of Giles Martin's remixes of the Beatles just seems to lack a consistant, considered approach so some do work and others don't although in general I liked the remixed Revolver and would get Rubber Soul although for me, it' s the UK mono I return to most these days and not my original Capitol Canada stereo. An "opinion" requires someone to experience and express it, right? So, nobody can tell you you're *wrong* about what you like, even if your feelings are based on errors or your reasons are nonsensical garbage. (See Marjorie Taylor Greene.) You really don't have to justify your own opinions or indeed the nature of opinion itself. But I guess you have had counter-opinions that have been worded in a certain fashion. Personally, I agree with a good proportion of your views. Not all, of course, but I respect your views, whether they match mine or not. If we all thought the same then it would be a very boring world, and of course there would be no need for platforms such as yours. Part of the fun is the debate and discussion. The Beatles releases are an interesting diversion and example. Personally I prefer the UK versions of the albums, but that is because I heard them that way originally. You did not, and therefore have a different perspective. The philosophy of not including singles on albums in the UK was something that the band did for the the best reasons. They did not want to rip-off fans by making them buy tracks multiple times. Today that sounds very strange, particularly when you compare it with Paul's multi-format releases in recent times. That is, of course, a big debate! Anyway, keep up the good work. And don't worry about the 'opinions'!

How about a counter-rant? I suspect this will be an unpopular perspective, but i find its a bit lame to just say "its my opinion" for everything, rather than "its great, or its crap" (and justifying it; for example, trite lyrics, out of tune vocals; absence of melodies, terrible recording, etc.). Without any critical insight, *everything* is fine. Oh bollocks! I'm a scientist by training - every single one of my papers is reviewed, critiqued, criticized, and sometimes flat-out rejected - and you know what? They are ALL better for the criticism. Why would music be different? The thing I really like about your channel is that you have great insights on why certain records are great. I get that its 'safer' to just focus on what you like, or couch it in 'its just my opinion', but as a long-time collector/music fan, but relative youtube noob, I have really noticed that the VC lacks real teeth - there are just not that many places where you hear real criticism - we used to have it in the music media (Rolling Stone, NME, etc.), but I don't really see it on the VC. Whether people like it or not, music criticism has long been a useful way of sorting out diamonds from dogshit. "in my opinion", snark on!
