firefighters dont have a word for snow because by the time they get to it its water
@magicaggy
7 жыл бұрын
the only time a firefighter needs the word for snow is after they've been disgraced, and exiled to the mountains to work as a search and rescue specialist. in fact, the firefighter language has no specific words for anything cold, except for the word for their equivalent of hell, which loosely translates to 'the shameful place of white fire'. if a firefighter were to perceive snow or ice without being prepared by their extensive banishment rituals, that firefighter would be unable to comprehend it and would immediately go mad and die from terror. this phenomenon (called the fireman's curse) was the inspiration for many of HP Lovecraft's stories, in particular his interpretation of cosmic horror, where a person is confronted by something so alien and incomprehensible to them they lose their mind. many of his stories also take place in snowy environments, which is a reflection of his own fear of the cold. if you know his work you'll probably know that HP was in fact raised by firefighters, so while he could comprehend the cold, it was a constant source of terror in his life.

I have a specific, potent hatred for using the term 'Eeyore' to describe people who have depression and mood issues. In my years as a care worker I _constantly_ heard DPSs and parents use it to describe clients with real issues and it always matched the patronising and dismissive attitude they held towards said clients and their experiences.
@DarlingMissDarling
Жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's got very big "you're creating this problem for yourself/you just have to decide to be happy" energy and my god is that fully disgusting. I'm married to a man that has immediate family who regard any diagnosed neurodivergence, mental illness or compromised mental agency (outside of full brain damage/retardation) so dismissively that I had to remove myself from social interactions completely. The way they talked about a woman (that was married to his brother) when she developed severe post-partum depression left such a bad taste in my mouth that I actually lost sleep over it; especially since I had been helping her almost daily and saw how much guilt she carried. Needless to say she thankfully divorced the guy not long after having their son. Smh.
