About this video: On January 9, 2024, Rockport outbound train 103 (not pictured in this video) operated to Rockport with the handbrakes accidentally enabled in their cab car (CTC-4 number 1720) for the entire duration of their trip outbound. By the time it arrived in Rockport, the front set of wheels in the lead truck of the 1720 had been damaged significantly and could not legally operate from then on. The north side work extra with GP40MC 1116 arrived later in the day and set the 1720 aside in the layover yard, then towed the rest of 103’s set of equipment back to Boston in the afternoon (as seen passing through Manchester, MA in the first clip in this video). In the afternoon of that same day, I swung by the Rockport layover yard (adjacent to the station platform) to see the damaged cab car awaiting the inevitable wheel replacement that would be required for it to move again. As only the handbrakes were applied during outbound 103’s trip, only the wheels on the lead axle of the cab car had been damaged. Two days later on January 11, 2024, railroad vehicles and a crane arrived and replaced the damaged wheels and axle on the site, something that I captured a few videos of here as well. The MBTA work extra towed the now operable 1720 back to Boston the following day, an operation that I was not able to capture, unfortunately. The final clips in this video were taken a few weeks later on January 29, 2024 in North Beverly, MA after the 1720 had returned to revenue service on an active set of equipment. As I tried to highlight in the last clip, the new set of wheels were quite shiny and stood out compared to the rest of the train. The 1720 remained in passenger service for months afterwards with no further issues.
