I had the honor of flying with Art in 1984 at the Sturbridge MA Airport at a show we sponsored. It was me, Aileron his dog and Art, what a great ride! What a great pilot, and sadly what a great loss of a super human being, RIP my friend.

His last performance was here in 85. Have a pic of him taxiing by with Aileron his dog behind his head. He died filming the spin sequence for Top Gun. He was a legend.

I flew with his wife Judy in the 90s at rialto municipal. Great guy.
I was stationed here at MCAS E. T. from 4/81-4/85...MAG-13 VMA-311 flightline. We used to watch the Blue Angles come out and practice all week before the airshow. They were still flying the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk then. When the show took place on the weekend we'd all be down at the beach somewhere...Laguna. Huntington, etc. Those were the good old days!!!

While I don't remember this particular show, I used to live in Long Beach and my Dad was a Marine. Seems like we went to every El Toro air show from '75 until I joined the Air Force in '88. Too bad they had to shop them. By far some of the best air show memories I will ever have.

My Dad was a C-130 pilot who performed a jato at that airshow.. I was 7 years old and remember seeing the smoke rising from the chapel. The crash happened on Saturday before the show.

WOW!!! Thanks so much for uploading that. Art was at my first airshow. Him, Bob Hoover, Mira Slovak (Boats Now) and a woman named Karen ? . It was at Miramar and they were showing off the new Tomcats. 1973 I think.

I don't know about that one. I didn't make the show in 85. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and would go to shows in Ca. with my family whenever I could get the time.

There is still no better Lomcevak than the Art Scholl Super Chippy tumble. It runs out of steam fairly quickly but there's no doubt about the true tumble about the CG. The engine noises are great. The Super Chip seems like a large airplane in the air. It just has a large presence.

Don, I understand that there was a fatal crash of a WW-2 bird at the airshow in '85...{?} My EAS was 4/85, so I missed the airshow at E. T. that year. Do you have any info about the crash? I think it crashed into the base chapel Thanks.
