As a youth coach for over 15 years, the reason most youth quit sports is twofold: their misguided parents, and their misguided coaches. Youth sports are supposed to be about providing a safe and fun environment first, life lessons second, and athletic skills third. Kids play sports to be with their friends and enjoy what they are doing. Shame on the parents who need to live vicariously through their children, and shame on the "win-at-all-costs" coaches. These two factors are also why finding youth sports referees is becoming nearly impossible.

Are you really a lawyer? This incident (in NY at least) would only qualify as a Harassment. Not an "assault and battery" because there was no injury. Which is a violation, not a crime and must therefore be in the presence of a law enforcement officer for arrest. Otherwise its a turnover arrest that must be made by the victim. I can't speak to the law in Carolina but that appears to be the situation that the Deputy explained. However I agree that the Sheriff's Deputy should have made greater effort for the turnover arrest while the guy was in town.

@@zod5966 Yes, I am. New York law differs from most jurisdictions concerning assault and battery. NY in fact doesn't technically have a battery law because it conflates battery with assault. That’s wild “if we didn’t see it happen we can’t arrest”. I dealt with that personally some dude pulled a shovel and came after this girl, I pulled my gun in defense of her. The cops came and basically said the same thing, the victim has to take out charges against the perp since they didn’t see it happen. In case it isn’t clear the victim wanted to press charges.

McDojoLife coming in clutch as usual with a direct interview with the person involved in a viral martial arts video. Massive props to the ref. So classy and composed. I admire how articulate and rational he is and his passion for wrestling and combat sports. The parents are obviously out of control. A clear sports dad trying to attack people because his son didn't get the success he wants. Let the kids learn, have fun, and lose. They can grow in character from defeat.

Well, we can only hope that the Kid won't suffer the consequences from his Royal Douche of a Father having a access of 'Roids Rage! I wouldn't be surprised if the Kid won't get penalized _(more than having been DQ'ed by leaving)_ because as the Ref said, when Events of a similar nature do occur, they're very careful to distinguish between the Parents' or Coach's Behaviour and the Kid's, and to never have a Kid suffer from other people's Actions/Foul Words. So, at least in this Tournament, I'm pretty confident that in the Future, the Kid will be allowed to Compete. His Dad will definitely have trouble getting in, at the very least! His mom too, to a lesser extent. And as for other Events held elsewhere, it all depends on whether this Viral Story got to their ears or not, and if so, if they're going to use good judgment and allow the Kid to Compete, unless he develops an Attitude Problem, since it seems to run in the family, and that the Apple *RARELY* falls off far from the Tree!

There needs to be a coaches only section for one coach per participant. The rest need to be in the spectators section. All coaches should have a briefing on the rules and code of conduct for the coaches. If a parent is acting as a coach then they need to be in this briefing. If the coach doesn't attend the briefing then that kid doesn't participate. The coaches or parent coach needs to be held accountable for how they act and also know that consequences come with inappropriate actions. If the coach breaks the rules they get kicked right in the balls.

Re: question of the day, the BJJ tournaments I’ve seen in the UK have the mats sectioned off by barriers, that are locked into place to mark of the competition area. You have to go through a queuing system to get to the mats themselves, and there are staff that usually only let you in if you’re competing. But, hey, we’re Brits and we a love a good queue! 😂

Glad ref didn't let it go and made the parent legally accountable. It sends a message to other parents, the kid also learned that move was illegal, that you stop when the ref whistles and that leaving the area disqualifies you from continuing the game, the school may consider mat placement a little farther from the wall. Poor kid. From dad's behavior, kid is likely under pressure to win so bad he would risk doing that move.

As for preventing things like this from happening… We are probably not going to prevent them all. That comes from my experience of working with the public in private security and emergency medicine for about 30 years. However, it could be helpful to write up a simple disclaimer statement of some type, which would outline what conduct is expected of people as spectators, what is not allowed, and give them a well - worded, kindly warning of potential for prosecution if anyone assaults a participant or other spectators or any officials in attendance. Maybe something in along those lines…

Learning to acknowledge the Anger & other similar negative emotions/impulses while being able to Supress them and Detatch your Mind from them is, I firmly believe, not only a Vital Skill to Master for a Fighter, but it's also essential in everyday Life in order to be a well balanced person, especially when you're subjected to extreme amounts of Stress from your Environment!
