I worked as a Physical Therapist Assistant for 19 years, and these were our bread and butter for years, Nothing better for the newly immobile patient/person due to pain than getting them stretched out. Not the most comfortable at first, but after a day or two, my patients invariably were greatly improved.

Ok this is amazing!! I've had chronic low back pain after I fractured 3 vertebrae about 15 years ago. I lost a lot of weight which did help but I got a flair up starting yesterday in my low back. I just tried this exercise and my back is 90% better instantly! I can't believe I've never been told about this before!!

This worked for me. I stumbled on it accidently when because of sciatica, I had to work from home on my laptop. Working stomach down with a couple couch pillow supporting my chest, I found that after several hours of work, my toes and shin had regained more feeling and pain had dissipated. Happy accident! Good luck.

Wish I had done this 9 months ago. Doctor told me I sprained my si joint. Sent me to physio. Got treated for si joint. No progress. 9 months later went back to physio because it got worst. Did some shrug exercises and got worst. New physiotherapist said I had a compressed disc no si joint problems. These Mackenzie stretches imediately improved me by about 50%. 6 weeks now but plateaued. The pain is just staying at this level. If I had been diagnosed right the first time thing would be different

McKenzie style extensions are highly effective for reducing central disc protrusions as the posterior column of the vertebrae is compressed thereby gaping the anterior inter-space, and encouraging the protrusion to relocate. Tautening of the posterior longitudinal ligament by including cervical flexion is an excellent "add on" to further encourage anterior excursion of the nuclear disc fluid.

The same can be said of PT's and exercise. When I went, they would watch me do exercises I was either already doing at home, or could just as easily have been doing at home. It cost a fortune to have that babysitter. One can't self-manipulate, however, so I think Murphy is probably talking about the extreme. -I actually was introduced to McKenzie exercises by a chiro, not a PT, and do enjoy them. This is a good beginners vid-as he says.

Then getting up onto my arms (press-up position) was a nightmare. Now I can get up to hte press-up position for minutes at a time. My disk is almost 100% back in alingment.

These stretches have helped me for for almost 2 decades with only 2 Doctor visits since original injury.. If reoccurrence is severe medicine, thermal therapy, a few other exercises, may be required. If I can not get the pain to centralize then a Doctor's visit is necessary. By treating my own back I have saved thousands in medical bills and medicine. However it does not work if it is not a herniation injury. And you should never do it unless you have been evaluated by a trained Doctor or Physical Therapist

I've seen at least twenty different chiros over the years and not one has 'hurt' me. I see anecdotal comments about it (mostly on youtube) and very few look actual, if any. Please tel me how they hurt you. I'm interested in plausible mechanisms. The PT's that manipulated me all butchered the maneuvers badly, but I also wouldn't say they 'hurt' me by creating any new injury. If it were possible, they would certainly have done so long before the chiros. So enlighten me.

I never meant to start a D.C vs PT fight. All I wanted to get across is the emphasis on patient independance. Don Murphy D.C said it best, ""Manual therapy can be a very useful tool if used for the right purposes, but it can also cause great harm-not from actual tissue injury but from something far more damaging in the long run--patient dependency"

For the client with a shoulder dysfunction McKenzie exercises may not be a viable option. Possibly trying this same activity in standing by placing the hands on the hips and gently bending backwards. If you have balance issues the standing activity may not work for you.

Well, it's usually a pretty anecdotal comment. there is really almost no way for a chiro to truly 'make it worse', but the treatment may be beyond what the person can handle. That would be more accurate. As far as PT's, most I have gone to are little more than babysitters watching me do things I can do at home. I'd take a chiro every day of the week.

Robin Rotfleisch If you are having increased symptoms with this activity, share that with the therapist. McKenzie activities are specifically designed for those with discogenic involvement in which the disc has herniated posteriorly. This technique doesnt work for anterior disc herniation, degenerative joint disease and/or stenosis with vertebral foramen narrowing. Any activities demonstrated in this channel are designed for usage and application by medical exercise professionals. Please consult with your physician and/or therapist.

I've seen at least three PT's who attempted manipulations on me and they did no more than a fair job. The first I tought was pretty good, until I went to a chiro two years later. In retrospect, the maneuver was a very gross and bastardized side posture adjustment. All of the PT's were very overly confident at it as well and to claim a chiro can make anything worse but not a PT is absolutely ridiculous..

Ummmm...DC's are NOT physicians and they are NOT the only medical professionals who can "adjust" the spine and extremities. It is also within a PT's (in many states) and a DO's scope of practice to do manipulations if they have the appropriate educational background. Have a good day.

Americans... They call their patients "clients" :-(
@MichaelJonesPostRehabology
8 жыл бұрын
Enzo, the reason I used the term "client" is because there is a legal distinction for the person receiving services rendered by a fitness professional and those rendered by a medical professional. Before making your comment maybe you should have asked about the distinction. These videos are specifically tailored for fitness professionals providng post rehab or medical exercise training or a term we coined in 1994 - "Medical Exercise Specialist" or MES. The MES provides no medical treatment nor he is or she licensed by the state or province to do such. Therefore, he or she works with "clients". The medical professional, licensed by the state or province, who also carries liability insurance covering "patient care" refers to the user's of his or her services as "patients". If you disagree, just wait until your first liability suit. When the opposing attorney asks about your licensure to provide "patient care"....you might reconsider your use of the term. "Patient" care has a much higher standard of awareness and management. There is little room for ambiguity or error when it comes to "patient" management. So, check the statutes of your province or state, here in the United States there's a clear distinction. The same holds in jurisdictions across the world. I suggest you review the "practice acts" in your region for medicine, physiotherapy, chiropractic, etc. Let me know what you find out. Also, check for the specific use and definition of the word "patient" and it's contextual usage by non-medically licensed professionals.

While yoga may have been around for thousands of years, the reason this set of positions is being highlighted is for a specific ailment or condition with a specific set of instructions on how to apply it to achieve results for treating the condition. Yoga has a different purpose, with a different way of using the same positions. Yoga, as it is currently practiced, might not help this condition.
