This is the story of the incredible McLaren Skunkworks at Shalford who produced the world’s first ever carbon fibre road car chassis. This was an incredibly small team many of whom were unskilled until they were trained by McLaren to strict NVQ standards. So proud were the team they would compete to achieve the highest Quality performance. The team shot this film on an 8mm VHS camcorder so that there would be a record of what was achieved.
It all looks a bit quaint now but it was cutting edge 25 years ago. I am still working on carbon fibre projects which will to make parts like this in a one minute cycle. We have used all sorts of video bits and pieces to tell this story, and may I thank the people whose work we have borrowed. Thanks especially to Ron and Gordon who had faith in us and made it all happen.
