As an aeronautical engineer, words fail me in expressing my admiration for the people who built these replicas. Totally awesome. At the University of Maryland in l956 I got us a Junkers Jumo 004 engine, so I am very familiar with it. I loved the pull starter, like an old outboard motor. The engine was way ahead of its time but suffered from poor materials. When we got it, it still had the last repair tag on it. Where it said (in German) "when required?" the answer was "sofort!".

+Daniël Boomsma They limited the new examples to five, four airworthy and one static. This was done in part to maintain market value since some airplane collectors today view historic aircraft as an investment that will increase in value. A sixth new example that was the test airframe is being used as parts to support an original Me262 restoration in Germany. It was challenging to resurrect the Me262 since the design wasn't fully proven and some changes were made to the new examples to fly safely.

As a B-24 tail gunner, my father reported that the Me-262 cutting through their formations at speed was too fast to be tracked by their power turrets. They simply pointed their .50 cal. machine guns at a space where the jet was expected to pass through and filled it with lead. Would be nice to see these aircraft parked or in flight next to a full size real (or replica) of the FW-190D-9 (Dora). That aircraft flew cover for the jets over Luftwaffe airfields during takeoffs and landings.

The P80 was also built during WW2, but was not used during the war. It was the first American jet to shoot down a MIG. The 262 was vulnerable landing and taking off, and in flight took such long turns, that the P51 could turn inside and cut off the 262. I was impressed by the one at the Smithsonian. I flew both the P80 and P51, but not the F86, which was designed from the 262. The F86 came out in '46.

the main german influence was with the sabre, nth American used german wind tunnel research they had on swept back wings which save them years of testing and also used the slat design of the 262 and used it directly on the sabre. I read that howard hughes had brought a ME262 after the war and had done some adjustments to it and wanted to fly it against a p-80 after the war, which the usaf kindly refused. Hughes was convinced his aircraft was superior and what I read he was right.

I would also add that replica warbirds began appearing as a means to allow more rare examples to fly while historical originals with history and provenance can remain in museums without the danger of being lost to accidents. Over the years, there have been replica Grumman F3F biplanes, Nakajima Oscars, Me262s, Fw190s and now replica P-51 airframes are being constructed.

The Me262 had some other advantages. It had the EZ42 gyro stabilsed gunsight, which made shots from up to 20 degrees of defelction possible, and hits were reported at a range over the design maximum of 1000m. The later interceptors were fitted the R4M air to air, (passive) rocket, and very impressive anti bomber weapon. Still, it was limited in a conventional dogfght; by throttle response in particular.

Actually the RAFs Gloster Meteors entered combat service in July 1944. Initially they were used over the UK to intercept V1s but they were eventually sent into combat over the continent, but were not allowed to fly over Germany so (to the best of my knowledge) no Meteors scored any air-to-air kills against any manned aircraft (they did shoot down a large # of V1s).

@Camerameister At least two of the buried engines found at the Frankfurt airport went to one Fw190D-9 project. It was a mixture of BMW 801s, DB, and Jumo 213 engines. FlugWerk converted 2 or 3 Fw190 airframes to D9 standard, one being completed with a modified Allison V12. It never flew and has now been sold and is being rebuilt as a genuine D9. The other is also being built as a D9. All total, there are currently three airworthy D9 projects so I hope at least one is successful in a few years.

A WW2 fighter pilot told me some things about the ME 262. There were two times during flight that this aeroplane was vulnerable: during takeoff and landing. The jet enginesback then were tempermental in that the pilot really had to concentrate on judicious use of the throttle when building up speed. Any rapid movement of the throttle during certain times on final could cause the engines to fail. All this equals : target time for the Spits and Mustangs. Field Day!

I heard the story about the engines only lasting 25 hours between overhauls. Apparently captured examples were alleged to have been flight tested, but there were no records, so they did not know if the plane they were flying had engines that were about ready to fail. Allegedly Hitler wanted to use the 262 as a bomber, but the plane was obviously a fighter. The simple explanation was given that the Germans had not got the right high-temperature resistant material for the exhaust turbine blades.

I unexpectedly met an ME262 pilot in the 1980's at dinner at a friend's house in Toronto, Canada. He had a visible skull injury from crashing an ME262 while flying too low over Holland. He said he was flying low and his plane did a cartwheel crash when a wing tip hit something when he banked to turn and woke up from a coma in a German military hospital. He wasn't expected to live and had been given his last rites. A month later he was flying again because there was an acute shortage of pilots. I don't remember his name.

The P80 was the first American jet to shoot down a Mig, and there are several accounts of P51s successfully shooting down 262s using that tactic. But that was unusual. Most 262s were shot down while trying to land. It would have been interesting if more 262s had been built or delayed because of Hitler denying that Germany needed offensive and not defensive weapons, and first used the 262s as bombers. It was a great design, but its engines were sooner than the metallurgy technology needed..

The Freeman Field Recovery Team has been exploring the burial sites at Freeman Field for "missing" captured aircraft. So far their digs have yielded a few bits of the many items brought for evaluation, but not the whole aircraft they had hoped for. It's thought more is buried under O'Hare airport. Soil acidity and oxygen level will affect buried items, though there have been a few recoveries. There's a site in the UK that I hope is dug one day where captured Axis aircraft were buried.

Sir Frank Whittle (British RAF engineer officer) designed and patented the first jet engine in 1930. Because of lack of funding he didn't build one until 1937. @tankhunters No, there were also two-seat versions of the Me262 such as you see here. This project to build 5 replicas started with an original 2-seat trainer which was restored for the US Navy and doing the restoration allowed the team to copy the plane (original blueprints are missing) and construct new ones (with a few safety updates and modern engines.) This project to build Me262 replicas began with an agreement with US Navy to restore their original 2-seat trainer for them, which allowed the team to copy the airframe for new examples. I'm fairly certain that the engine in the P-80 was a license built De Havilland Goblin, the same engine as in the De Havilland Vampire jet fighter. This was a centrifugal design, less 'advanced' in concept than the axial flow engines that the germans used, though the design was probably more refined and also more reliable due to better high temperature alloys.

This replica Me262 was duplicated from an original during restoration because original blueprints are not complete, in fact five new aircraft were constructed. The only major changes were modern engines for flight, corrections to weak points in the original landing gear design and improved brakes for safe operation. Buyers of the replicas have added the Swastika where it is not prohibited by law. (The example exported to Germany does not have the Swastika.)

After commenting that the ME's great disadvantage was during takeoffs and landings, someone (I forget who) said that this was true of any aircraft. this is correct, EXCEPT that due to state-of-the-art back in those WW2 days it was highly dangerous to rapidly advance the throttles, those Jumos had a bad habit of exploding if loaded up suddenly (has to do with airflow across the turbine blades). Many of these fine jets were lost when this fact was discovered. So, again, they had problmes.

At that time 550 aircraft was a drop in the bucket. Most of those kills were bombers, which even the Hurricane beat during the Battle of Britain. The mission of the 262 was to halt daylight bombing, which it failed to even slow down, and almost all 262s were ultimately shot down or destroyed. After Sweinfurt, at least the 109 and the 190 were able to stop bombing for a while. So the 262 failed its objective.

What you fail to realize is that the 262 squadrons were flown by the best pilots the Luftwaffe had to offer against much newer American pilots. With that in consideration, there should have been a much higher ratio than 5 1/2 to 1, so I wonder what went wrong.

The Gloster Metior became operational 27 Jul 1944, but was used mainly for knocking out V-1s.

@DeutschwehR03 You're right, the 178 was the first jet plane ever (and its predecessor 176 the first rocket plane) but the 262 was the first operational jet fighter. The 178 was a testbed and never went into production.

a mere 100 operational Me262's shot down over 550 Allied aircraft.. although Germany ultimately lost the war, the Me262 was a very successful aircraft.. even more impressive considering it was such a break through design and produced in unfavorable conditions. Many "winning" Allied aircraft were not as successful as the Me262

Five replicas were constructed, with four airworthy. One single-seat, two dual cockpit, and two that can be converted between single-seat and two-seat.

@capie44 actually, as FiveCents said, that was the ME-163 Komet, but it never got up to 60-90 minutes. the average time it took for the plane to start the engine, take off, then run out of fuel was 8 minutes. It would take off at a nearby hidden base, fly up alot higher then the B-17's shoot one of them, go a little higher up while turning in a slow turn, come back, shoot again, and by that time it was most likely out of fuel so it would glide back to base hoping not get shot by P51 pilots.
