this is the scene where they get the closest to explaining the meaning of life (the part with the background noise)...the distractions from finding the meaning of life is literally the preoccupation with the physical world such as the hats or the moving building which distract ppl from self observation

"Wearing enough hats" is being used in both a literal and a metaphorical sense in this scene. When it is said that "Hat sales have increased, but not pari passu", we must be talking about literal hats. But metaphorically, "to wear more than one hat" is to take on more than one role in a setting or organization - which would increase the opportunities for "guided self-observation" to assist in the development of the soul. This is the film's deepest explanation of how to find life's meaning.
@jonbuckley1798

Maurice Nicoll, Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky Volume 3: Now I return to the "hat". That part of the invisible psychology or psychological body of a person that is connected with how he or she thinks is the "hat"-the thinking-cap. The head thinks-so its covering is what clothes it. A person thinks from what to that person is truth. You think from what you take as truth. What forms of truth you have been taught and accept constitute your "hat". So it is a legitimate question to ask a person, not only: "Why do you think this or that is true?" but "Where did you get that hat?" which equals the question: "Why think like that?" The answer is, of course: "Because I was brought up to think like that". Yes, but another person, brought up differently, thinks in another way-that is, wears another hat, of a different colour or a quite different shape. And so on and so on. Yet each thinks he thinks aright and each thinks he thinks from absolute truth. So everyone wears a different hat-an invisible hat, because it belongs to the invisible body-that is, the person's acquired psychology. Cleese is well acquainted with Nicoll's work.
@jonbuckley1798

@Bramble Hutterman "to wear more than one hat" is to take on more than one role in a setting or organization - which would increase the opportunities for "guided self-observation," instead of for instance, "Why think like that?" The answer is, of course: "Because I was brought up to think like that". Another person, brought up differently, thinks in another way, that is, the person's acquired psychology." So, if you're familiar with Gurdjieff's methods, role playing was a big part, in order to kick received acquired psychology and to think differently than how one is mechanized to do so... nd that role playing was often quite difficult, and put the student in very difficult situations in order to shake oneself out of one's mechanical nature.

Weird that "wearing more than one hat" didn't even occur to me; I thought of it as 'not enough people are wearing hats' and although the person wearing 2 hats would be developing their soul it would certainly be a soul retarding distracting to other people when they see someone wearing 2 hats

"Due to man's unique ability to be distracted from spiritual matters by everyday trivia" Trivia like the crappy accents. Here we have a guy trying to explain the difficulties in the development of the soul and spirituality, and you're all banging on about his dodgy accent. Shame they never dealt with the hat issue in greater depth, although I fear that the posing of the question "for what purpose?" would simply lead us to the conclusion that absurdity is the default state of the universe.
