I’m originally a car mechanic who went into welding fabrication and now works repairing hydraulic rams for forestry equipment, I work a Bridgeport and a large dean smith + grace lathe now at work I’m more or less completely you tube taught as far as machining goes ( tubalcain , this old tony , Adam Booth , John mills , Joe pie and more recently yourself) yours / Joe pie’s math is slowly starting to sink in most goes over my head but if even a little sticks… I enjoy your videos and have a great respect for your work ethic and knowledge please keep them coming 👍🏻

Very well explained 👍. When at school I scored a BIG FAT ZILCH in a maths test. Those are the exact words of the teacher in front of the whole class. Imagine the embarrassment and shame of a 14 year old boy. I just didn't have a clue about how these lessons would be of any use. Nobody ever explained the point of trigonometry. I left school and had an apprenticeship to become an Injection Toolmaker. Wow!! My eyes were opened! I immediately excelled at trigonometry! I loved it! It's mostly about knowing where to put the triangles. Once you start seeing the contact points and rollers etc, it's amazingly simple. They had to force me to go home at night 😟

Well done, there is a huge divide between what goes on in my hobby shop and this level of inspection, but it is always nice to know the proper technique and the level of precision that is possible if one is willing to take the time to learn. Enjoyed whole video series, cheers!

hi Mrcrispin, im enjoying all your great videos ,doing the same kind of machining that your doing and the ideas are a great help. want to mention something about the conical part and figuring tapers in general on anything, instead of using trigometry to figure angles i use the construction master calculators functions of run/rise/pitch/ diag/. suppose we have a right angle triangle[ which basically is a taper] where RUN is horizontal line, RISE is vertical plan, PITCH is angle, and diagonnal is hypotenuse, enter any 2 figures like pitch and run and calc will give you diag and rise , been using this to figure virtually any angle for 15 years, fast and simple, also does a host of measure conversions, can be downloaded on smart phone from calculated industries, excellent for guys who cant do cosine/tangent stuff, let me know what you think, im positive a lot of home hobby guys would get one if you did a video of it . thanks

Now that's a good idea! How about it Mr Crispin? I never was taught trigonometry in school, we did what was called "Modern Maths" this was in the mid sixties to 1970 absolutely bloody useless and I've never used it since! So an app that would sort out these things would be great. Com on Crispin, your audience awaits with baited breath!

You could put the small end of the cone down on your surface table and measure across 2 equal sized dowels held against the cone to get an accurate width without a height gauge, like measuring a gear over wires. We would frequently give these dimensions over dowels on parts with conical or triangular features for the machinist
@MrCrispinEnterprises

Yes good idea. I did consider something along those line for checking while machining. You could push a parallel up against the end of the component with that tailstock and the check over dowels.

Great series of videos. Only one slight criticism - on the sketch of the conical workpiece the diameter symbol should always precede the actual dimension value. Assume this is to stop any issues with confusing the diameter symbol with a zero. Apologies, but my Rolls-Royce apprentice training makes me very pedantic with these things!
