The manual does not say what bushing you *should* use. It says what bushing you should *start* with.

This method will not give you an accurate reading of the weight of powder thrown while the press is operating normally. The vibration of running the full machine will cause a heavier drop do to compaction/settling of the powder into the bushing. You should always make sure the machine is full and running like you normally do at the speed you normally run and then start checking your powder drops. You will be amazed at the difference. My guess is that is why your first drop was heavier than the second 2. You had jostled the machine around before checking the first one resulting in the heavier charge.

Keith, thanks for your comment, but yes, this method will give you an accurate reading of the charge...I've reloaded tens of thousands of shotshells and metallic cartridges for more than 25 years, which have been used for multiple types of competitive shooting. To get an accurate powder measurement with a progressive press you should weigh more than one measurement when initially setting up/jostling/operating the machine (or any powder measure or progressive machine for that matter). In the case of the MEC, that means the charge bar transitions back and forth, and drops shot as well as powder. In verifying your charge this way, yes the powder charge will initially fluctuate as the machine is being jostled and the powder settles in the hopper - sometimes your initial throws may be heavy, and sometimes they may be light - this is why I took multiple measurements. You should always take multiple measurements until you're getting consistent weights so you know how much powder will be dumped when your machine is running normally. And no, you don't need to make sure the hopper is full of powder when taking measurements - you just need to make sure it isn't less than about 1/4 full so there is some weight over the powder being dropped into the charge bar. This is shotshell reloading on a progressive press so some slight variation in each powder charge is normal and perfectly okay as long as you stay within the upper and lower limits of your specific recipe.

I think your response is more applicable to a single-stage press than to a progressive press. I've measured charge weights using both methods on my MEC 8567 and found no appreciable difference. Nothing wrong with your method, just not necessary in this instance.
