Hey Ray! I am working in a car AC only shop and I want to tell you that simple things sometimes are the solution. 7/10 times when a car comes with a high high side pressure, it is due to dirty and restricted radiators. Simple fix is to spray them with something that is good in disposing contaminated surfaces, like kitchen clean or something like that, then wash the radiators with a hose (through the front grill and under the plate) Most of the times this is the reason for high pressure in the high side of the AC. Also, to prevent leaks from brand new o-rings, lube them with some AC oil first!

@alexander, you are spot on! Condensers act like an air filter for the radiator and gathers years of dust, dirt, and bugs in the fins restricting air flow which results in increased pressures in the system, both high and low sides. The really only opportunity for refrigerant blockage is in the expansion (orifice) valve and the filter/dryer. All other components do not have refrigerant restriction opportunities due to tube size. Ray still doesn't check for oil quantities in replaced components to see how much oil he needs to add before firing off a repaired system. Oil runs with the refrigerant and does not remain fully in the compressor. This is why when systems are run with low refrigerant it ends up destroying the compressor over time (insufficient lubrication, making it noisy, like that previous Ford Escape unit) because there is insufficient flow to carry and return oil to the compressor. Also you are correct in recommending lube for new o-rings. Interesting to note that where there is a refrigerant blockage, there is a pressure drop and a corresponding drop in temperature of refrigerant across the blockage which can show up externally as sweating.

As Antanio wrote, I read in a copy of Ford Times (years ago) that the "dash" board came from horse-drawn wagon days, where the dash was where you put your feet to apply counter-force when stopping the team. When the horseless carriage was developed, they retained most of the terms used in a horse carriage. Besides using the angled wall between the carriage floor, they had to add a section on top of it to protect the occupants from a gasoline fire in the engine compartment. They added a "new" designation to this section, which they called a "firewall". The part of the car inside the cabin that contains the instroments and cover over the hvac assembly, wiring and ducting, is often cslked a "dash". But in reality it's actually called an "instrument panel" by automotive companies.

Cleaning the dirt and debris from the evaporator is another good preventive maintenance item. I performed this step on two of my vehicles (20 year old and 26 year old) without ripping out the dashboard or drilling anything: 1) Purchase two cans of Lubegard 96030 Kool-It Evaporator and Heater Foam Cleaner. The kit comes with a can of cleaner and a cap with a long sprayer tube attached to it. 2) Locate the evaporator drain tube (may need to jack up the vehicle to access it). 3) Take the cap and insert the sprayer tube as far up the evaporator drain tube as possible, but make sure you leave enough room to attach the can to the sprayer tube. 4) Shake the can, then carefully attach the sprayer tube cap to it. 5) Place a container underneath the work area to catch any dirty liquid which drains out during this entire process. 6) Spray the entire contents of the can into the evaporator tube. The foam will expand through and around the evaporator. Remove the can and sprayer tube when empty. 7) Wait 15 minutes for the foam to break down the dirt and debris. 8) Start your vehicle and run the A/C on low for about 5 minutes. You should see the dirt and debris drain from the evaporator. 9) When the liquid draining from the evaporator turns clear, you're done. If the evaporator is really dirty, perform Steps 3-9 with the 2nd can of Kool-It. 10) If the second can isn't needed, store it for next time. Performing this maintenance item every 3 - 4 years will help keep the evaporator performing at an optimum level. The A/C in my vehicles are now blowing ice cold. One more important thing of note: If you have an older vehicle and your experiencing evaporator freezing issues, the most likely culprit is a defective expansion valve (located in front of the firewall where the two refrigerant lines leading to/from the evaporator are connected. This is an often-overlooked item when replacing the A/C compressor, receiver-dryer, etc. That happened on my 26-y.o. vehicle, so once that was replaced, the evaporating icing issues ceased. Based on the lessons learned from that incident, when I had the A/C compressor, receiver-dryer, etc. replaced on my 20-y.o. vehicle, I also had the expansion valve replaced as a preventive step.

Use an air compressor to blow the alcohol back through the expansion valve in a reverse flow direction to try to flush out the blockage. Do this multiple times, monitor what comes out of the upper hose feeding into the expansion valve to see if anything comes out. Alcohol will completely evaporate, leaving you a clean internal system to recharge.

The dashboard protected the driver of a horse drawn vehicle from dirt and excrement thrown up from the horses hoofs. Each horse produces about 30 pounds of excrement and 2.5 gallons of urine daily. Roads were often unpaved and well travelled streets collected a lot of excrement. Conditions were especially bad in wet and hot weather. Odors and flies in well travelled areas were intense and street cleaning a major problem for cities. The front steps of city dwellings often had steel scrapers installed for persons to clean shoes and boots before entry through the door. The well-to-do departed cities for country, mountain, and shoreline estates during hot seasons. People appreciated the cleaner streets and odor free air after we transitioned from horses to trolleys and motor vehicles.

A dashboard was a board that they used on horse drawn carriages to stop the mud from splashing up from the horses dashing. Hence dash board. Ray, don't get upset, but really enjoy your videos and you are a very good mechanic, but I wish you were a bit cleaner, throw things away when you are done, put your tools away when you are done. Clean your work area so when you start a new job, everything is proper and ready for you. I know Troy does a lot of cleaning for you, but hey come on, you make the mess you clean it. Thanks for listening, I hope. lol

protective board that prevented the driver from being splashed with dirt IN HORSE DRAWN CARRAGES

Originally, the word dashboard applied to a barrier of wood or leather fixed at the front of a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh to protect the driver from mud or other debris "dashed up" (thrown up) by the horses' hooves. The first known use of the term (hyphenated as dash-board, and applied to sleighs) dates from 1847.[

That's why we always pressure test with dry nitrogen first to double check then always gave a minimum of 30 minutes vacumand if we have to break the vacuum we used dry nitrogen to break it so no moisture enters the system

Hi Ray, both pressures are hi so I don't see a restriction. That would cause a higher than normal head and lower than normal suction in most cases. Thinking non condensables are in the system. Remove and recovery will cure that. Been in the AC business over 40 years. Love your show. Of course doing all that your doing will result in same but I don't think your condenser is plugged. Your low side would be low. Unless it is grossly over charged .

Plugged condenser as in restricted air flow either dirty fins or fan clutch going south.

The term "dashboard" actually dates back to the time when people used to travel by horse-drawn carriage. Then, the dashboard was merely a protective board that prevented the driver from being splashed with dirt "dashed-up" from the horses' hooves.

needle bouncing is ALWAYS air or moisture in a system. moisture doesnt compress, hence the higher readings., you need to put a real vacuum pump on it, and pull a good hour vac, . then break the vac and purge, then another 1/2 hour deep stage vacuum. heres a tip, if u have no leaks, and the vacuum gauge rises slightly after vac, its boiling moisture out of the system. if it does this, re vac again,, it takes a long time just to boil even a few drops of moisture out of a system. retired master hvac tech here.. take it for what its worth.

The term dash board comes from horse drawn buggie, where the Dash Board would prevent the driver from mud ad dirt that was Dashed-up bu the horses hooves... Love, a old Cavalry trooper

My favorite technique to locate a leak is to pressurize the system and hit every connection point and valve location with a spray bottle of soapy water. Any leaks will reveal themselves by bubbling up. Also saves on potentially wasted refrigerant.

Apparently, commercial systems for discharging and recharging auto AC systems don’t include a provision for dry air or nitrogen pressurization. You’d have to rig something ad hoc, and then who would you blame if something went wrong?

Doesnt a vacuum promote less damage to seals ?

Fun fact when calling the front seat some may yell shotgun. Back in horse and wagon times one would guide the horses and wagon and the passenger would hold the shotgun.

Dashboard. In the horse and buggy days when the horse was dashing his hooves threw up a bunch of dirt into the front of the buggy so a board (panel) was installed in the front of the buggy to block the dirt from getting into the buggy.

I like the comments referring to horse drawn carriages, on early automobiles the 'dashboard' was the angled panel between the firewall and the floorboard (which was made from wood), exception being the "Curved Dash Oldsmobile". The instrument panel was called a dashboard because before seatbelts, people would dash their faces against it in collisions. Ray, check with your local Chevy/Gmc dealer about a replacement AC placard, may still be available along with other information decals.

Ah, yes. Grew up during the age of hard metal dashboards, before seat belts, when you could actually reach the lower windshield area without having ET fingers.

Try spraying water on your condenser and see if you pressures go down. If it cools better you might want to check out your fan clutch due to lack of airflow
