David Bohm was reported to have said that the psychological thinking we engage is bruising the brain and Krishnamurti is similarly pointing out that the repetitive thinking processes are causing deterioration of the brain. Krishnamurti provided the antidote in the form of total attention and therefore complete ‘inaction’ regarding psychological redress to mental distress.

Thinking is talking to yourself (words). Words are sounds we use to represent things. Words are not the things they represent. People see nature in words (a "car", a "tree" etc). Your vocabulary affects how you see nature. Seeing requires that the observer and the observed become one. No prejudice. No opinion. No expectation. An empty mind without desire. The moment you desire an empty mind, you are finished (you desire). To approach like it is your first time with extreme self awareness but no memory. Memory comes from experience and this (memory) prevents you seeing truth. JK is not my guru.🙂

Language is mechanical. The very act of reading is like an assembly line. Repetition. One side to the other, row upon row. Paragraphs constructed from sentences, words, letters. The very process of reading and writing is an act of mechanization. Literacy has advanced our world by permitting the recording of knowledge, thoughts and ideas (beyond our individual lives). It has also come at a huge cost. I wonder how our reliance on reading and writing negatively impacts our brain over the course of our lives?

"Memory" is entirely from the perspective of the mind-body organism (i.e., intellect). It unwittingly and errantly focuses on conceptual concerns, which (very mistakenly) digs one even deeper into the morass of concepts, attempting to gather even m-o-r-e conceptual information about the how and why of dealing with concepts in order to deal with concepts (yes - a circular equation going nowhere without end). Concepts themselves are the exact specific difficulty preventing the ultimate experience of The Absolute (i.e., Self Realization). "You" are NOT mind/intellect and, "You" are NOT the conceptual information/data that mind/intellect deals with and wallows in constantly, in its endless intellectual effort to: 1st) reduce all experience to second hand, indirect information/data; and, 2nd) assemble it in checklist fashion in order to recall what's conceptually deemed as "successful procedure" (whether it's actually successful or not!). And, in this instance, it WON'T/CAN'T help at all (not one iota of a teensy-weensy bit). The whole effort of AUTHENTIC SPIRITUALITY is to put the experience of intellect in its rightful place, which is secondary to direct PERSONAL experience. Direct PERSONAL experience has nothing to do with experiencing intellect and/or memory (which is indirect experience). And, it's definitely possible (and, very much preferable to all experience of any kind). And, it's possible to successfully accomplish all mundane tasks without constant reference to concepts and the mind/intellect from which concepts constantly arise and function as a barrier, cutting us off from the experience of the REALITY OF THE ABSOLUTE, which is 100% senior in all ways to all other types of experience (which is the entirely secondary experience of objects).

By observing the movement of thought, watching how it goes from one information (that we store or have stored in our brains) to another in order to make a thought, so that thought is only an ilussion, is something that takes the decission for ourselves, its Information from the past projected in the present moment. So it is judging with only part of the information, the part we had stored, and previously proccesed with previous processed information and so on... so the conclusion could not be what REALLY IS, but just a part. So its a waste, an illusion.

What is the deterioration of brain? I mean thinking and executing evil to somebody whom you think as a possible threat for your existence as life or as a person at a work or as a somebody?
@nangotoman9429
3 жыл бұрын
The brain is constantly recording, processing and judging, using space and energy in mere illusions, using previous information to force the movement of thought in a way (judging), a way that is pre stablished. So its always recording situations and remembering situations and waiting for more or situations that could happen. And all that is just unnecesary use of the brain, so it gets deteriorated. Its not about good or evil.

That which moves in the same pattern all the time has a tendency to wear itself out and deteriorate. If you do the same exercise all the time carrying a heavy object on your back the same way, your body will wear itself out. If you do balanced exercise which is organic and actually is responsive to what your body tells you, your body gets more resilient. It's similiar for the brain. Mechanism makes the brain dull. A good example is drill in the military. The goal is to make the candidates function the same way all the time regardless of exhaustion or of varying stimuli and natural impulses and affections. They become insensitive to new input and lose their critical thinking, creativity and curiosity. People who were in the military often reported that experience of becoming dull.

Alright, So the deal at the end is. If you're aware of the fact that thoughts as a free flowing driving force of action can be deteriorating for our brain then we could put it in a right place where it only acts as a driving force for handling activities which don't have a negative impact on our brain. Once in its right place (meaning once directed in the right direction) thoughts could no more deteriorate the brain. Is that so ? What do you guys think ?

Carl Jung talked in his psychological type theory about the function of thinking being one that defines things. When you define a thing, you naturally lose part of it. As a simple concrete example, if you define a fork as a fork, you will use it for eating only, but if you have the same object without such definition, its use cases would be much wider. Same principle applies to other definitions we make, even the more abstract ones we use for our "thinking" type of cognition. Is this perhaps the thing Krishnamurti was pointing towards? I think saying that thinking deteriorates the brain is true in a way that i mentioned with jungian thinking function defining things and thus losing aspects of the thing being defined, but its not a physical deterioration of brains that is happening at least in the larger scale, just reshaping of it. Sure unnecessary connections are removed, but also new ones are being made.
@kooroshrostami27
Жыл бұрын
I think what you say is part of it but also something more which manifests itself as physical deterioration. Thinking because of its devisive nature and trying to become something (it is always goal-oriented) is in constant conflict and struggle. There is a relentless effort which is much like a stress disorder that perpetuates itself and in the long run damages the brain. Like grinding pieces of material against each other it wears itself out. Ofc we are not denying the inevitable deterioration of the brain which happens with age, but the deterioration which K. is talking about is a kind of avoidable deterioration that results from self-absorption.
