Flip side to this issue... getting charged $125/hr labor is brutal and has been the primary factor in why I ended up doing a lot of my own repairs and learning how to. I don't make $125/hr so at the end of the day even with the cost of tools factored in AND that I'm not getting price gouged on parts like I seem to get quoted for, I'm ahead financially than if I had a shop do it. On top of that I have another issue with the automotive repair industry which is the paying for a misdiagnosis situation. Case in point, I mentioned before how I had a parasitic drain, took it to a guy who I had asked before hand "is this something you know how to diag, I can always take it to a different shop if not". He assured me he knew how to diag it. Ended up not fixing it, giving bad information to me, and months later I (just a layperson in this field) ended up diagnosing it to be a faulty remote starter. But I paid for a bad diag, and that just doesn't sit right with me. Because so often I hear the argument of "well you're not paying me for how fast I do it, but for all the experience and knowledge that allows me to fix it so fast". Valid argument but then when a person with bad experience and knowledge doesn't resolve the problem I don't seem to get a refund/discount. So it seems that argument is only upheld one way. lol I'm not saying mechanics shouldn't be paid well, just right now, labor rates are PAINFUL for customers. (I should mention I'm dropping this comment about half way through the video so maybe you address these things later)

Thanks for the contrary! 2 things.... do you hold everyone to this same logic ( charge for negative outcome or no resolution) with lawyers, doctors, or labor workers? 2ndly... how much is being correct worth to you?

@@partsshooterI mean malpractice is a thing for those professions and can be sued over. Problem with mechanics is there really is no way to tell who is a good diagnostician and who is just a parts shooter (no offense lol). Even in one of your anecdotes, a lady worked at a shop but her techs were idiots according to her so she brought her vehicle to you. But the average person doesn't have the luxury of knowing who in town is good and who isn't because they only have some vague reviews to rely on. And so I guess we end up having to pay different places for diag until we find one that actually knows how to do their job. Not sure how that's fair to the customer. Again, good techs should be paid well but good techs seem to be difficult to find and having to pay for the bad techs which really tarnishes the entire experience. And I totally understand the concept of "well I can charge $75/hr for labor and be stuck working 40 hours a week or I can charge $150/hr for labor and lose some business but only work 25 hours a week and still be ahead financially and time wise". It makes total sense. But I think we can all agree that $125+/hr for labor is painful for the customer. If the market will bear it, so be it I guess. But it is painful.

@@partsshooterI had typed out a response but I guess youtube didn't like it because I had included a link in it as an example. That being a truck owner had his truck at a dealership for two months due to a loss of power steering and some other function. Dealer eventually diag'ed new power steering and some other stuff, $4500 bill. Customer didn't accept that and did their own research in that time and came to the conclusion that it was a $20 ground strap issue (SMA actually did a video on this last year as well). He went to the dealer lot with his own tools, replaced the corroded ground strap in the parking lot and all was fixed. He wasn't a tech, just an annoyed customer who had enough motivation to research his own problem and had the tools to do something about it. In your opinion, should he pay the dealership for their faulty diag? Dealer was about to ream him for $4500. I don't think he should have to pay for diag or any labor they did up to that point since it was all based on a tech's wrong diag. I don't know how to accurately draw the line on when we should and shouldn't have to pay. But I will say this, if I, an untrained average idiot goes and diagnoses and fixes it when the tech couldn't, that person should DEFINITELY not get paid for not fixing it. Because what are they being paid for at that point? To improperly fix things? I can do that for free. Techs have the luxury of systems like alldata and similar stuff that average people typically don't have. And they have the option to turn down jobs if they aren't confident in their ability to resolve it. That's really important, they can turn down jobs if they aren't comfortable in their own ability in fixing it. So if they accept the job then the assumption is that they are getting paid because they can fix it correctly. And I'm guessing from your own responses that you feel that no matter what, a tech's time should be paid for. How do you reconcile paying the bad techs that even you mention are out there? Like if you're not good at your job should you get paid to do that job? If a painter does a shit job at painting my house I have grounds to not pay or sue them. Should a tech who does a shit job at fixing my car be above that same responsibility? The whole point of paying someone to do a thing is that it's done correctly.

I think 150$ for a solid hour of work is right and going by the book I honestly think is over appraised, I think the minimum should be 25$ for 5-10 minutes of work or double the cost of the part (whichever is more) and I'm not a mechanic and I think this is fair and I know close to nothing about cars but say you spent 5-10 minutes on fixing my car, the part was 150$ the book says 4 hours I think my bill should be 300$ at double the cost of the part, this is fair to me but the book I think is bs half the time unless it's talking about someone explaining to me how to do it, running to the store to buy the tools, going and buying the part, then installing the part myself then me knowing next to nothing the book might be accurate.

$40/hr labor rate? A shop in a small midwest probably charges more. Also isn't there a maximum on the labor claim? Most of my customers have been to multiple shops so they are happy to pay my diagnostics charge + repair. I get a lot calls just to price me out but I don't haggle. In my area, most customers ask how much for this.....which involves a diagnosis but they don't understand the "diagnostics" charge. Back in the day, when cars didn't have 15 modules, that would've flied....but in this current world it does not. Most of my specialty is doing electrical which most of the shops in my area won't touch....but I'm happy to get em. I take pride in my 5 star rating😊

Everyone is conditioned to want parts replaced so they feel like it's fixed. In general people don't know what is what with cars today so getting some understanding of what's what makes spending easier. It's not knowing and feeling like someone is trying to take you, which seems to be norm idea... diagnosis is separate it's standard. Bro you can probably charge more than you do - the thing is dealing directly with costomer I would find difficult

yes of course, charge for diagnostics. It is standard and these days necessary to diagnose with all the electronics involved. I think what's really at play is planned obsolescent ... things are designed to fail and making it complicated so one way or another it's all becomes maintenance to change out plastic parts that are meant to be changed. It sets the tone for how people act in a frustrated way ... I mean the car is run by the computer ... it decides ... it's all intentional... in my opinion. if you think about it we haven't had a real advancement in transportation in years, EVs are BS and we are still on combustion engines running on oil... "they" have been running the world this way for centuries and keeping real advancements at bay. Its all control just sayin' ... think about it ... finally 'they" will allow hydrogen power next while anti gravity has existed for decades. we are fed on a slow drip.

I've watched a couple of your videos, I'll tell you what you are worth. You are as good as any mechanic at CERN, NASA, Intel, Applied Materials. You are worth five technicians. I don't know what your situation is, but any company would be lucky to have you as a field engineer, international field service. I'd pay you, $60/hr, perdiem, hotel, rental cars, travel, $200,000 per year. You are worth it. You would also make a good lead on a small team. As far as what to bill for repairs, it's case by case, but for first class work, it is not cheap. The line wrench turners are fixed rate, the shop rate has to be 4X or 5X that rate. A guy at your level should have employees getting their hand dirty. And don't markup the price of parts, but do charge for all the time spent getting that part to your technicians hands.
