Lye works great also but don't use lye on a aluminum radiator , only on the old brass radiators.

Tap water is what causes lime deposits in radiators. I just spent $600 to replace a core on my '69 Plymouth Road Runner that was almost completely blocked. Always use demineralized water along with full strength coolant, or use the convenient 50/50 coolant instead.

I got a small rad out of john deere 322 garden tractor, they want 800 for a new one. I put sealer in it and its clogged pretty bad, gonna try this out, might have to recore mine hope not. Good vid man.

I have the same tractor, and mine has what looks like some yellow mineral deposits from a treatment with Evapo-Rust Thermocure cooling system rust remover & flush. The instructions said to drive it for 4 hours, and so I left it in for two weeks to get that much time on the mower. Big mistake, looks like, as that yellow crude is stopping up some of the ports. I tried using some Prestone cleaner to try to remove the yellow deposits, but didn't work.

@@Jimidan1000 I used that Thermocure too and left it in for a while because I couldn't drive the car. I think that yellow junk is some of the chelated rust, iron oxide. I had a small pinhole in one of the tubes and that yellow junk was all over the bottom radiator header and my garage floor. It may just stain some of the calcium carbinate that's already in there. There's tons of stuff you can try. I think the best and safest is Citric acid. Mercedes recommends it as a rad flush. Pretty safe for all the cooling system metals. White vinegar may also work pretty good. I have tried Phosphoric acid and muriatic acid. Both are nasty and caused some leaks for me.

Amy tips on what solder to use when trying to seal pin hole leaks in the cores? I have a 50 year old car that i daily drive. I have had the radiator repaired once. The same shop basically told me to get a new one when i called asking them to fix it again.... Not very good business judgement??

I wish I knew this method before I got rid of my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee all copper radiator. I take it this doesn't work on the newer aluminum radiator with plastic side tanks crimped on.
@islandtrooper4x432
Жыл бұрын
It will work, but can react with the aluminum. shake quick, dump and rinse, you need to shake the rad vigorously and rinse several times after to get the drano residue off the plastic. Also don't use red coolant. Dexcool eats its own systems.

this is why you use distilled water/rad fluid because tap water will calciate the rad/heater

My car is a 2008 and the Radiator has a Metal core with Plastic top & Bottom. Is it safe to use Drano or Vinegar with this type of Radiator. Can anyone tell me if I leave the Radiator in the vehicle and flush the whole system with Drano or vinegar. Or would these chemicals ruin the rubber hoses. Taking out the Radiator is too much work. Plus there is nothing wrong with mine. I will just leave the radiator in place and disconnect the 2 hoses top and bottom. I’ll cap both connections and fill only the Radiator with either Drano or vinegar.

If you have no reason to believe the core to be plugged or full of scale, then just use a bottle of Prestone radiator/coolant flush. I do not recommend flushing your whole system with my recommendation. Thats NOT what I am doing in this video, but your the 3rd guy to ask anyway. goodluck, stay cool

What about CLR
@islandtrooper4x432
5 жыл бұрын
CLR is a great product, but I've never gotten these results so cheap. The powdered kitchen crystals have a very strong chemical reaction inside the radiator when the hot water is added. The worst rad will only require a few tablespoons of powdered Draino. It's a tip that I am confident to share because it's cheap and always provides great results.
@patrick4865

@@islandtrooper4x432 - would it be safe to use the crystals with the radiator still in the auto? If it's ok, can I run the engine where it will circulate through the whole engine and heater core and later drain it out?
@islandtrooper4x432
4 жыл бұрын
@@patrick4865 yes, but I must stress how important it will be for you to do a very thorough flush, especially if you have air conditioning and or the extra under the passenger seat heater. Essentially each system adds an extra heater core, so the AC and the seat heater will be getting flushed as well. Use a stronger mix 1 cup of crytals to a gallon of boiling water. Premix it, (do not breathe the fumes) pour it into the radiator after draining out as much coolant as you can and resealing the system. Top up the rad with warm water and start the engine. Move the heater controls on the dash to all positions. Holding in each position for a minute or so. Turn on the seat heater if equipped. Don,t run the engine for more than 10 minutes. Shut down and let cool for 20minutes. Now flush with clear water for another 20-30 minutes repeatedly moving the heater controls to all the positions again. Use a Prestone flush kit to attach your garden hose to the firewall if you can. Flushing both at the firewall and at the radiator will give best results. **Be warned that the concentrated mixture will burn skin, melt vinyl, burn leather etc.** Avoid concentrate spills and flush/rinse with allot of water. It's time consuming to do a flush with any method so be careful and patient and you will get good results. Coolant flushes can often make a weak spot in the radiator or pipes appear, so if you have any pin holes this could make them worse, but that's just the old equipment letting you know that it's time to replace it. Good luck

I bought a 94 ford ranger edge splash, with a 4 liter engine. Its been sitting for 5 years, but it started right up with a fresh battery. The radiator apparently had been drained, as when I opened the drain plug, nothing came out When I took the radiator cap off, from what I could see, it looked very rusty inside. Thanks for the info. - I'll give it a try

I've used CLR and never had good results with it. It's too weak. If it's not too bad I would use Citric acid. It's safe and very effective. Problem is it's not all that cheap or easy to come by. You can order it from Amazon.
