This video is a recording of the Medicare for All Town Hall meeting that took place on June 8, 2024, at the Jefferson County Library, Arnold branch. In this meeting, representatives from Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) discussed the current state of healthcare in the United States and how a single-payer national health insurance system can improve it.
A single-payer national health insurance system, also known as "Medicare for All," means that one public or quasi-public agency handles healthcare financing while the actual medical care is provided by private entities. In this system, all U.S. residents would be covered for all necessary medical services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, preventive care, long-term care, mental health services, reproductive health care, dental and vision care, prescription drugs, and medical supplies.
The program would be funded by combining existing public funds (like those from Medicare and Medicaid) with new, modest taxes based on income. By eliminating the current inefficient and profit-driven multiple insurance systems and replacing them with a single, nonprofit public payer, we could save over $500 billion in administrative costs.
Under this plan, premiums would be eliminated, and 95% of households would save money. Patients wouldn't have to worry about co-pays and deductibles anymore and would have the freedom to choose their doctors and hospitals. Doctors would also gain more control over patient care.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted that healthcare costs are the leading cause of bankruptcy for American families. With Medicare for All, these financial burdens would be significantly reduced, providing much-needed relief to millions of people.
