Patients who have spent time in a hospital and who were never CODED with INPATIENT STATUS, will have their insurance claim to Medicare processed as Outpatient NOT Inpatient and the benefit paid for the hospital stay is MUCH less--putting the Medicare recipient at financial risk. Medicare will not pay for your nursing home costs without the 3-day prequalifying hospital stay as an INPATIENT. Hospitals are coding patients as outpatient under "observation" to avoid readmission penalties under the Affordable Care Act. An inpatient admission is generally appropriate when you’re expected to need 2 or more midnights of medically necessary hospital care, but your doctor must order such admission and the hospital must formally admit you in order for you to become an inpatient.
