What is the difference between the average Medicare Advantage Plan out there and Medicare Advantage Plans offered by a state, for example for retired teachers or state employees, through big insurers, like Blue Cross/Blue Shield snd United Health care?
@BoomerBenefits
Жыл бұрын
There really is no major difference other than the premium and cost-sharing amounts. All Advantage plans must offer the same benefits that you would receive from Original Medicare. However, each Advantage plan may offer additional benefits, which can vary by the plan as well.

People do not understand that they are giving up traditional Medicare when they sign up for an Advantage plan. Too many disadvantages with this: limited physicians, barriers if you need to see a physician outside of network, increased costs incurred with some complicated illnesses. The words advantage plan and give back benefit are very misleading.
@AthiktosOfficial

Not actually true. As a licensed Medicare agent myself, the supplemental that people are tricked into for anything other than catastrophic coverage are far more of a loss. The only change from original Medicare to a Medicare advantage plan is a more specialized network. You also get massively higher benefits compared to supplemental which will typically make you spend more monthly if you don't have many health issues. I will only recommend a supplemental to someone with extensive health needs that they can see being an issue in the future.

Thanks for the info about the Part B buyback! Unfortunately, my county doesn't participate. One thing I wanted to ask is, you mention a catch. Since I did intensive research before choosing a plan for myself, I became aware of the difference between co-pay and co-insurance. When I looked at the no premium plans, it seemed like the catch was co-insurance instead of co-pay, so it's not possible to anticipate what you'd be paying for a procedure or test or service, instead of the fixed co-pay amount. So, while you'd be paying zero premium, your actual cost for treatment if you become ill, could be more than you'd end up paying with a plan that does have a premium. Do I understand that correctly?
@BoomerBenefits

Hi Linda, every Medicare Advantage plan has different cost-sharing. One Advantage plan might require you to pay a copay for your medical services, whereas another plan might require you to pay a coinsurance. If you are ever in the market to see which plans are available in your area and what their cost-sharing is like, you can always give us a call at 817-249-8600 and we can help you for free. @@BoomerBenefits I already have a Medicare Advantage Plan, but there is a lot of discussion among my friends about Medicare Advantage Plans, so I was specifically interested in the aspect of zero premium plans that I mentioned: it seems like the zero premium plans have co-insurance - a percentage of the cost - and not fixed amount co-pays. Do I understand that correctly?

@@lindacas Every Medicare Advantage plan sets their own cost-sharing amounts. So it varies from plan to plan. Some plans might have a copay for their services, whereas another plan will require a coinsurance!

Does the Part B premium get paid on the 1st of the month and is the giveback also applied on the 1st of the month?
@BoomerBenefits

Hi there - It comes out of your social security check on that months payment. Typically the buy back does take a month or two to get set up and then you will see it in the same check.

Great question, Phillip! FEHB is not creditable coverage for Medicare, so you will want to apply for Medicare Part A and Part B to avoid a late enrollment penalty. We discuss this more in our KZitem video, FEHB and Medicare for Retirees | Should You Sign up for Part B?

Do you have to be age 65 or > for this to work? What if you are collecting Social Security disability for 2 years, then automatically enrolled in Medicare, but only 56 years old?

Hi Sam - If you qualify for Medicare early due to disability, you can apply for a Part B Buyback Medicare Advantage plan if it's available in your area. If there is not a Part B Buyback option available, you can still enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.
