Medieval 2 Total War Positives: + Crusades/Pope/Jihads/Religion mechanics are a nice addition + (Personal opinion) It has the best recruitment mechanics of any total war with the unit pool system + Different settlement types (castles and cities) + Best(?) AI of any total war. I've seen the BAI use flanking tactics, hammer and anvil, keep reserves and overall just perform better + Graphically, it can look stunning even today using a combination of the right tools and settings + Upgrading your units with better weapons are armour gives a nice visual change to it + As of right now it has the widest and best array of mods available for any total war Negatives: - Engine is getting old and outdated. Modern machines are struggling to run it and the better mods take longer to run. - Population mechanic is removed/dialled back massively - Battles can be slow, boring and get repetetive. Infantry is slow and sluggish. Missile units feel weak and unimpactful. Cavalry is super strong and too overpowered. - Almost all European factions shared 90% of the same roster; if it weren't for different colours, you couldn't tell them apart. Byzantine and Muslim faction rosters feel like they're inaccurate and missing units. - No real internal faction mechanics or noble family mechanics That's eveything I can think of right now. It's still my top 3 total wars but it does have it's issues that hold it back. If it weren't for mods, I'd have stopped playing it by now.

What do you mean by population mechanics being removed/dialled? I played a lot of RTW and apart from bigger impact of squalor and more problems with order I do not remember any difference. Also, I think people are too hard on medieval in terms of unit diversity. Most factions do have similar stuff but you can see that even in historical mods. It has its historical reasoning. But there is quite a lot of diversity. Apart from traditional western armies, Poland and Hungary have some eastern flavour, Scots, Rus and Byzantine rosters are pretty unique. Moors too I think? It is not most diverse but I prefer it over RTWs schreeching women, countless phaalnx or german phalanxes.

Idk why they thought it was a good idea to dumb things down so much with the historical accuracy in the base game back then. The fact that the engine allowed for 31 factions and 200 regions makes me wonder they didn’t just have 31 factions and 200 regions. There wouldn’t be as much of a need for the level of ahistorical amalgamation factions that vanilla has. It was my first Total War game, and I played thousands of hours of it in vanilla, but I can’t handle stuff like the “Spain” (with there being no Aragon) faction any more; also the lack of Barcelona and Burgos being present.

Medieval 2's combat animations are probably the main reason I can't get into it the same way as Rome 1. I guess it's kind of petty, but it just looks so awkward and weird the way people pause to bend over and shake their head every time they get hit, and how there's only a single death animation outside the synched "kill moves", leaving the battlefield littered with bodies in identical poses all facing the same direction if you use missiles. This seems to be hard-coded too, or at least I haven't come across any mod that diversifies these animations. Also they removed the ability to view your settlements outside of battles, which was a real bummer to me at the time.

When listing the historical inaccuracies I do have to wonder as to the size of CA when making Medieval 2 combined with time spent making the game. Perhaps those two were problems and combined with harder to research topics (especially at the time given. Nowadays we can just look it up on our phones) led to some of the inaccuracies. Such as with Spain you may noticed one of the rebel provinces is held by a general called "El Cid" and the other complaint of which town was owned may have been either unknown to the devs, a rough guess at their control. Or simply was there to permit some balancing. I'm just saying that their mistakes don't seem malicious or simple laziness like some modern properties that knowingly ignore and alter historical details that are the focal point of their projects

One thing that bugged me in Medieval 2 was two things. The world didn't feel very varied. I mean there are unique units and att times it can lead to some fun clash of cultures. However nothing approaches Rome. In Rome you had Phalanxs from Macedon and Greece. The Barbarian tribes frome Europe with Beserkers in Germany and scythe chariots in Brittannia. Carthage had elephants and Numidia with their skirmish cav. Egypt was an economic powerhouse Scythe had horse archers And more. It felt like no matter where Rome journeyed (just lumping them into one) there were differing obstacles for them to tackle and over come with their adaptable unit roster. Medieval 2 has unique units bit it's really at best 3 varieties. Southern/Northern European Eastern European Africa/middle East Then you get the Mongols which is a new enemy visually but mounted archers exist within several factions already in or near Europe. My 2nd problem is the mercs. Starting in Europe you have 3 choices for so long. Crossbow, heavy cav, Spearman. Now yes Crusades open this up a bit but it takes so long to see anything different. Rome you had tons of variety to the mercs Barbarians infantry/cav Hoplites Cretan archers Slingers Camels Skirmishers Falxmen Etc.

When compared to Rome Total War Positives: - massive graphical improvement over Rome - religion mechanics (Priest/Imam and Inquisitor agents, heresy, College of Cardinals, Pope, Crusades/Jihads) - two settlement types (City/Castle) - unit replenishment pool, multiple recruitment slots, free upkeep - increased modability Negatives: - clunkiness of battle gameplay When comparing to Rome, I think this is what it mostly winds down to. I would say that Medieval II is more historical than Rome, considering we have Bronze Age Egypt, pink pajama people, three Roman families, of whom two are ahistorical, representing Rome, Germanic phalanxes, screeching women etc. in Rome. For Medieval II units, sure, they are too colorful and feudal knights/general bodyguard look like they belong in the renaissance, but there are plenty units wearing no armour or mail armour etc. perfectly fitting for the time period. I believe that the gameplay of Medieval II is as captivating as the gameplay of Rome. Remarks like remarks on character portraits are rather subjective and opinions vary. I agree on the remarks when comparing to Medieval I.

Nice video, and I would actually agree with a lot of your criticisms (though Medieval 2 is by far my most played title both modded and unmodded. It was my first game in the series so I bear a lot of love for it, and it's actually probably my favorite game of all time). I must say, I'm not exactly sure why you dislike the portraits in comparison to those of Rome 1, since they look like they were designed using the same program or cg style, but I can understand what you mean when you say they might be less memorable than those of Rome 1 for individual characters. I guess I remember also finding the anachronisms in armor for the generals rather odd, as well as the campaign map inaccuracies, but as I played more I personally just got used to it and it's part of the charm of the base game for me, similar to the unified "Gaul" "Germans" and "Britons" and the divided Roman families in Rome 1. I can see, however, why that would turn you off completely. I think the best thing this game did for me was get me interested in the Medieval period and history in general, and it was actually at that point that I started getting into the more historical mods for the game, like SS6.4 and BC, and now, Tsardoms. Those more historical mods in turn actually got me even more into history, and thus a cycle of learning was created. I know far more about the medieval Balkans now than I ever did. I'm more of a slow battles guy personally as well, so those of medieval 2 don't really bother me all that much. I guess that's why I have the patience for DeI's battles. Actually, coming to Rome 1 from Medieval 2 I found the battles too quick, though I've come to appreciate the different paces for the different games. In short, I love medieval 2 and have so much nostalgia for it (us Med 2 lovers are known to be very stubborn, aren't we?) but I can see and understand your critiques of the base game. We can both agree, though, that the mods are incredible. I can't wait for a potential remaster of Medieval 2. Peace.

Medieval 2 vanilla, while I think it's ok, so underutilized it's potential it's almost criminal. Virtually every aspect can be, and has been, improved on by modders. Unlike many titles where modders' "improvements" are more customization, the improvements in M2 modding are straight up improvements. You want better campaign AI? There's a mod for that, actually many if you include more the "customization" aspect, but there are some that keep the basic gameplay of the AI while just making it less stupid. Better battle AI? There's several, and virtually every one is better than vanilla. Better graphics? Of course, even not counting those that improve, or focus more the art direction, there are several that just make the vanilla graphics better. The list goes on.

To he honest,I have just started playing total war games and personally I really hated the reappearing factions mechanics in med 1 , as it is kinda unbalanced how they emerge with full 4 stacks of units in a region, especially when you are already fighting on two fronts and your army is needed on the borders. In my opinion, it is really annoying, as you have to destroy the same faction again and again. And Im really glad that shogun 1 didn't have re-emerging factions, the game was really beautiful and solid in its simplicity. Also the rebellions itself is an ambiguous mechanic: I just went crazy when I saw that unrest in one province instantly spread to neighboring provinces and as a result, my whole empire was torn apart by a civil war. And all this happened because of just one unstable region. btw, I'm a newcomer to the series, so correct me if I misunderstood something in these mechanics.
@GudeaTW

well historically several empires collapsed quite quickly due to such rebellions (Almoravids, etc.) so it's a mechanic I really appreciate in Medieval 1. Of course it needs some refinement (I plan on including a similar mechanic in Chivalry Total War but it will be less severe)

Everyone had things to say to eachother in med 2 but for rome 1 the only ones who at all had interesting general speeches were the romans with the rest being after thoughts same with rosters cause tbh most of the factions in rome 1 just felt like copy and paste worse there than med 2 like for example Thrace has no reason to exist as the highlight for them is a merc unit. Wow so cool!

At its base level Med 2 is certainly not the best game in the series and may even be one of the worst. However when I look at every version of Total War (this includes Base versions of each game and all major overhaul mods for each) the main stand outs are always Med 2 mods. After playing every version of Total War for hundreds/thousands of hours Med 2 Vanilla is way down on the bottom of the list. But if I were to rank the top 10 TW games in the series it would be as follows 10. Hyrule TW - Mod for Med2 9. Elder Scrolls TW - Mod for Med2 8. Broken Crescent - Mod for Med2 7. Medieval Kingdoms 1212 AD - Mod for Atilla 6. Stainless Steel - Mod for Med 2 5. Divide et Impera - Mod for Rome 2 4. Thera Legacy of The Great Torment - Mod for Med2 3. Tsardoms TW - Mod for Med 2 2. Warhammer 1/2 and most likely 3...can't wait - Sidenote base game is great but game is enhanced almost as much as Med 2 by the MANY available mods. 1. Third Age Total War - Mod for Med2 - A true example of a mod team producing something better then any major Dev has ever managed with the content material. Even if you are not a fan of Lord of the Rings i think it goes without saying that the amount of content provided in this mod has to make it the best version of Total War to date. We can ignore the sheer amount of new units, factions, ui additions, scripts, balancing, difficulty changes, character models, map models that by far exceed any other mod or base version of the game and all you really need to point to as to why this mod is the greatest of all time are the custom settlements. They are amazing, they are far better then anything CA has ever produced and are rivaled only by the current work being done on custom settlement mods for the New Warhammer TW series. Third age Total war is hands down the best version of Total War available. And the mod itself is so popular it has spawned many of its own sub-mods which are amazing in their own rights. All in all Med 2 Tw mods offer more gameplay and amazing campaigns then any other version of Total War and for that reason alone I think Med 2 Total War is the Greatest game in the series... which is an odd thing to say because the base version of the game is just plain bad. If they ever come out with a remastered version of Med2 they would be wise to include mod integration with existing mods otherwise they are just remastering a turd... and no matter what you do a turd is a turd.. Right Rome 1 remastered?? right? :P great video by the way and thanks! again for bringing Tsardoms to my attention.. it has consumed my life these last few days lol. Apart from a few ctd issues during certain siege battles it has been one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in TW. Trying to hold together the dying Rome is just a spectacular campaign, and the david vs goliath campaign playing as Croatia was so good. Currently bringing god to the heathens with the insanely powerful Knights. Truly amazing mod but until they add custom settlements for battles to match the amazing campaign city models they have then it shall forever fall short of Third age and Warhammer.

Nice review. Replaying vanilla with retrofit mod. Too long since I have played vanilla campaign, only those huge mods. Still feels good. Unit recruitment is the best and playing around campaign map is nice (though it pisses me off they removed 'choose heir' button from Rome1). Need to check if there is a Rome 1 but with Medieval 2 engine mod somewhere. Slower battle is better for me, since I actually have time to watch that charge and watch battle animations. Morale lasts longer,Overall, its a roleplaying game for me, Crusader Kings with actual battles. Nothing beats inbred & insane HRE emperor who starts war against papacy and brings down his empire.

The fact that the game doesnt feel "medieval" is partly due to it inheriting so much from Rome 1. For example, buildings, walls, landscapes, siege equipment are all insanely large. This was carried over from Rome 1, but it worked with that game because of the epic ancient theme. But in Medieval, it feels out of place. Backwater villages have paved roads big enough for Roman triumphs and small castles are protected by giant Homeric walls. It doesnt have that cramped, frugal medieval feel. Everything feels too spectacular

One of my biggest problems with Med 2 was the fact that two unit types were made practically useless, that being two-handed units and pike units. Pikes have this weird glitch or ‘feature’ owing to a weird sidearm thing they tried to do, wherein the pikemen would immediately drop their pikes when meeting an engagement. This means Scotland is a terrible, terrible faction to play because their entire thing is pikes. Two handed units, apart from the Varangian Guard, whom were the only ones that could beat Feudal Knights in a straight fight, are terrible owing to the two handed glitch that was thankfully fixed in Kingdoms. Oddly, despite the fact that almost none of the units are accurate or are simply anachronistic, it didn’t really bother me. Teutonic Knights look sick af, Feudal Knights look beastly when upgraded, the mid-tier up Muslim units all look awesome, Boyar Sons and Dvor look great etc. oh it’s chock to the gills with inaccuracies and anachronisms, but apart of me just accepted it. Afterall it wasn’t like Rome 1 exactly had utmost accuracy with Samurai Scythians, Corinthian helms still being used, bizarre barbarian chainmail vests and Egypt, just… Egypt (wouldn’t change it for the world though). Edit: also, f***** some of these siege maps, trying to get units cleanly onto and off of walls for some of these is a task so herculean it borders on impossibility, and more on luck then anything else. The path finding is some of the worst I’ve ever seen on the sieges, the amount of times *most* of the unit got onto or off of a wall but then five guys didn’t get the memo and kept standing there, shaking their privates was infuriating. Especially in a game where careful placement of units is the key to winning battles. I’m somewhat conflicted on the sluggishness of the units, on one hand it’s realistic that a unit doesn’t mechanically respond to orders as if we’ve beamed them to their brains, and it makes positioning that much more important. On the other hand it’s somewhat annoying, and makes charge in charge out charge in again tactics clumsy at best when you’re doing it with anything else apart from cavalry, especially combined with the flip floppy nature of unit collision. Sometimes a unit gets clipped on its side by connecting with one dude, meaning they stop dead and try to engage, meaning if you’ve positioned a unit too close behind another, trying to get a hammer and anvil flank you’ll be met with as mentioned jankiness. Other times they continue on past gaps in your or enemy lines to attack the unit they’re meant to, or want to.

I enjoy med2 way more than rome1 mostly due to the setting. Never tried med1 though, doubt it will be fun for me due to me being used to the rome1/med2 engine. Pretty much everything in med2 is an improvement over rome1 for me: battles, campaign, events, music etc. Also never liked mods for med2 or rome1, always preferred vanilla. My favorite campaign is the teutonic one, close second is britannia, then americas and my least favorite one is the crusades one. I like to build up my faction instead of starting out with plenty of land and units and I just don’t enjoy the middle east crusades as much as, say, the baltic ones which is why crusades campaign didn’t work for me. IMO the strongest side of medieval 2 is the events: starting out with peasant militia slowly working your way up to feudal knights, then starting crusades, getting invaded by mongols, getting gunpowder etc. The kingdoms campaigns played on that strong point and made it better with each faction getting some sort of a faction specific event: (welsh rebels join you when seizing english cities, Lionheart arrives with an army of templars, William Wallace joins your army as Scotland to just name a few from the britannia campign), while in rome1 the only similar thing you get are the marian reforms and the civil war but even then, that’s only for roman factions

I feel similarly underwhelmed by Medieval II. I can look past the issues on the campaign side, but it's M2's battles that bother me the most. They lack the satisfying sense of weight and pace that battles in Rome, Napoleon, and Shogun 2 have. Additionally, I find that the pathfinding of units was a step down from Rome's already questionable pathfinding. I really only use it for Third Age nowadays. Although I will look into Broken Crescent and Tsardoms. Tsardoms in particular seems like a fascinating setting.
