The review is cool ♥️ For historical, pirate stuff, I could be wrong but I don't think classic pirates ever used cutlasses. The cutlass is a much later style of military sword, based on sabres. And that particular style there has a very mid 19th century design 😚 (Crimean war?) It would be a great costume sword for someone doing a 19th century outfit. It's a weird design really- that patent hilt style is very mid 19th C, but that style of gaurd and pomel cap is what 1970s fake Indian tourist sabres are famous for.

I just bought a cutlass, and ended up going with the Condor Naval Cutlass over the available Windlass cutlass, was scared off by a few reviews that seemed to question Windlass's dollar for value when it came to their cutlass specifically. I'm pretty happy with the Condor but it's good to hear the Windlass performs well, it's blade is differently a bit more traditional to the Dutch klewang/1917 pattern naval cutlass it's based on.

Great to have you back! This looks pretty much identical to the Cold Steel 1917 Cutlass, with minor changes, which is no surprise since Windlass made those for Cold Steel. It seems like Cold Steel discontinued the 1917 Cutlass while introducing their new Pirate Cutlass, I’m guessing this gave Windlass the green flag to sell it direct under their own name. I would be curious to know if there are any big differences between the old CS 1917 and this Windlass one. The 1917 Cutlass is one of those swords I always wanted but never got around to grabbing

When I first saw the pictures of the Battlecry Cutlass I assumed it was going to have the same guard as the Cold Steel 1917 Cutlass or CS 1917 Hybrid Cutlass. Glad to see its not & has a unique design from either CS model. Given Windlass does produce some blades for Cold Steel I wonder if the Battlecry has the same blade as the CS 1917s but regardless I agree the looks on this version are better.

This seems to be based on the US 1917 Naval cutlass, which is based off of the Dutch Klewang culass. I have an original Dutch one, it too has little to no flex in the blade and I bet they'd cut similarly. I'll have to see how closely it compares to this one in measurements.

my thoughts: thats a very nice reproduction of the dutch 1898 klewang which is similar to the us M1917 cutlass. several centuries after "pirate swords" but cool and efficient nonetheless- some of the us 1917 cutlasses were used in vietnam. after it did not come to boarding combat in both world wars (surprise 🤪), they were stricken from the navy in 1949. but it turned out they made great jungle machetes in vietnam. so several were issued.

Don't have a Windlass, however I do have an original 1917, which your cutlass is based on. The build seem very close. The Original has a different cutout pattern on the shell guard. The fuller is wider an deeper. The tang is slightly thicker on the original and steps down a mm or two after the guard. Looks to have about the amount of distal taper... meaning not too much, but some. Funnily enough the handle scales are an early form of plastic, while the modern version is wood. The scales are secured by copper rivets. Make for a very attractive contrast in color- gold on black... Not positive, but I think the original's handle and guard a bit shorter and more compact. Mine is super tight and still very serviceable. I have cut a bit with it. Fun, but the guard is sharp and bites. It is one of my 'go to's' if and when SHTF- or for light gardening... which ever.

Welcome back. I think you are barking up the wrong tree with that cutlass if you are looking for a "pirate" blade. It is much more representative of a 20th century martial blade like a Dutch M1911 Klewang or the American 1917 copy. Windlass and others make hangers, hunting swords and cutlasses that are really much closer to that 17th/18th century "pirate" sword.

@@NobodyAtAll56 it's not that it makes or breaks the purchase of a sword, it's that could be a differentiator for buying a similar sword from another brand. Also welcome to the channel! I hope you enjoy what you see.

@@medievalreview thanks for elaborating. By contrast, in the firearms space you’ll have people willingly overpaying by hundreds of dollars for the sake of brand loyalty and hard-to-quantify quality and performance claims
@medievalreview
Ай бұрын
@@NobodyAtAll56 No different in the sword community. The "high end" in swords will run into the thousands of dollars and sometimes years of wait time for a specific Smith or company. This kind of sword represents a more entry level and mass produced price point. Think about someone wanting to buy a 22LR lever action rifle, as a fun aside for their collection. They likely won't spend thousands on that, and when browsing cheaper options they would come across Henry or Rossi or some other brand/design. The price points will be fairly similar, and perhaps one is 50-100 cheaper, the only real difference being something cosmetic, like the stain color of the stock... at that point as a consumer they may choose the cheaper option because they don't mind having something more normal for their purpose.
@NobodyAtAll56
Ай бұрын
@@medievalreview I see what you mean. Out of curiosity, what makes a sword like this an entry level, just for fun kind of sword, compared to the high end ones? Do people compete with swords and the more expensive ones come with better build quality, durability, reliability, and performance in competition, or is it mostly cosmetic? That would be analogous to one area of high-end guns. Although for the other area where people are willing to pay for high-end performance, it would somewhat surprise me if people were looking at swords as a primary defensive asset for something like severe civil unrest.
@medievalreview
Ай бұрын
@@NobodyAtAll56 going to do my best to answer everything here.... as with most things the price is reflective or what you are getting, design, performance, build quality, uniqueness, etc are all reflective in the price. So an entry level sword will have he low price but will miss out on some aspects that would drive the price up. This sword for example is manufactured primarily in India, they are using skilled smiths, but they are more or less mass producing them to the extent that quality under scrutiny will suffer. It's hand made so that can lead to imperfections, like loosening of the parts over time and use, and they likely are not hyper focused on refining performance. There are a lot of competition forms that come within the sword community, the primary one is Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) where people gear up in spades fencing gear and fight with blunt equivalent weapons. They also do cutting competitions with sharps, just like how I cut tatami in this video. People are rated on all manner of their performance in these activities, so higher end equipment is something people will pay for, cosmetics are generally secondary in competitive sports, but some people will still pay for that as well. I would say no serious person is owning swords for self defense, but they are paying for an actual function weapon units own right ( The joke in the community is that you don't need to reload a sword). The equivalent there for sword and firearms would be what we call Sword Like Object (SLOs) and actual swords. If you go on Amazon and try to buy a $50 sword made out of stainless steel, that is not a real sword. Similarly you would go buy a $30 spring action airsoft pistol and claim it is a real gun. So, for someone like myself, I have an interest in sword and such because (as my channel name may suggest) I like medieval history. I collect swords, and use them (not against people obviously). I participate in HEMA with a small local club, etc etc.... I also own firearms for the modern real world.
