I am 5 months in with T1D and still using pens, starting to consider a pump and as you said, it's such a big decision! It's easy to feel like I have no clue where to start personally when it comes to an insulin pump. It sounds like the Medtronic 640g is very good and extremely helpful! Oh Eva! I'm so sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis. Whenever I hear of someone being diagnosed in this time I think it must be incredibly stressful with the pandemic stress on top of the new diagnosis stress! Good for you for getting though it all and good for you for finding and reaching out to the online community! I think that the online community is the best resource in so many ways because otherwise, like you said, we might not even have a connection with other type one's at all, due to it being rather rare! You are so so welcome here and I thank you for being here and watching and just for all your kind words. They mean a lot to me and I'm thinking about you as you get to grips with this new diagnosis! I know it's probably a lot for you right now, but I promise you it does get easier. In terms of a pump - I'd also encourage you to check out the Tandem Tslim x2 with Dexcom G6 combination. This is what I'm on right now and it's just incredible! We're all different so you have to choose what's right for you but I'd say it's very much worth looking into! I second your comment on Medtronic customer service. I’m usually a big pharma hater but I had a pump failure once when I was 17. Called myself(they didn’t require my legal guardian call) told them what happened and they didn’t make me go through any sort of hoops. They had a whole new pump sent overnight to my door step free of charge.

I have been using Medtronic pumps for nearly 30 years and I very much appreciate the difference they have made in my life. I have two 630/640 cons you missed. First, it is difficult to tell how much insulin remains from the icon provided on the home screen. It is necessary to go into the next screen to see the number of units remaining. An older version of the pump which had a gap in the case so you could see how much insulin was in the syringe was immediately more helpful. Also, there is only one low battery alert. If you are in the middle of doing something (sleeping, for example), you will click OK to silence the alarm. If you then forget to change the battery, you get a very loud and embarrassing no battery alarm. If you don’t happen to have a new battery nearby you have a problem. There should be more than one low battery warning signal. I have mentioned both of these issues to Medtronic personnel.

I've recently started using the Minimed 670 G pump with CGM and I have to confess that it is much better than the pens. It takes some getting used to, but your overall control is much better. What is also nice is the fact that the pump indicates how much active insulin you still have in your body and takes that into account when it works out the amount of bolus insulin required for a meal. This reduces the amounts of hypo's due to "stacking" of insulin. It must be kept in mind though that you will have to be able to accurately determine the amount of carbs in your food as the pump requires this information to make the calculation. If you enter the incorrect amount of carbs you will end up with either too little or too much insulin which can be very dangerous. I am however still struggling with combining the pump with my activity levels. I take part in road running(at least 15 km) on a daily basis as part of my training and usually end up with a low. Luckily the pump warns me will in advance due the the CGM that I am using with the pump, but it is still very frustrating. I would really appreciate if there are any athletes out there that might be able to offer me some advice/assistance with regards to this. Being on a pump is however still way better than pens and I will not want to go back.

@@donalmccann32 SmartGuard is nice, but does not make up for the severe problems with the sensor. If you want a predictive low glucose suspend (PLGS) functionality, I recommend you take a look at the Tandem t:slim x2 instead. It works with the G6, and also provides PLGS with its Basal:IQ tech.
@madison6668

@@donalmccann32 Hey! I know you weren't asking me, but just weighing in... the Guardian was way too inaccurate for me personally to trust the Smart Guard. I switched to the 670g pump specifically to use the smart guard/auto feature but my sensor readings were so far off from my finger sticks that I did not feel comfortable using the auto feature anymore. In addition, it was getting exhausting to be woken up in the night with alarms that my pump needed to be calibrated to stay in auto mode or that I was hypo just to find out my glucose was well in range. That's why I ended up switching to the Dexcom! Just applied my first sensor today so I can't comment on accuracy yet, but hoping it's much better than the Guardian! Best of luck!

Hi I just found your channel, really enjoying the content! I’ve been a T1 diabetic for about 20 years, I use the 640g with the guardian 3 sensors, if you calibrate about 4-5 times a day, I think it’s pretty accurate. I don’t have hypo warning signs so the sensor is invaluable for when I’m driving or bogged down in work and not paying attention to my sugars (naughty I know, but that’s life!). Looking forward to more of your content, so many people know very little about this condition, I love to tell people about it (they probably don’t like me waffling on) so it’s good to see a channel talking about it like you do!

Then I'd pick the t:slim x2. Or, if you live in Europe, try to get a DANA pump, or an Accu-Chek one. Medtronic pumps are great, but Medtronic does not even consider working with a CGM that's not one of their own. I know that Tandem, Insulet, and Diabeloop are cooperating with Dexcom to provide low glucose suspend functionality, and later, real closed loops based on the TypeZero algorithm that got acquired by Dexcom.

I would never part with my Dexcom, so i'd be nice to have a pump that works with that. But I'm still very grateful for my pump, no matter what! :)

Great video, very informative! I know the Medtronic sensor didn't work for you. Quick question, do you know if the NHS covers CGMs in addition to the pump, did they cover it in your case? I was wondering as the sensors and CGM are so expensive to fund yourself(3500 a year). Great review!
@ShesDiabetic
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Catherine! I honestly can't speak with authority on what the NHS does or does not cover because I've seen so much vary massively from borough to borough. Honestly, when I went onto the Medtronic I was under the impression they would give me some sensors for part time wear, but this was offer was completely off the table when I made the switch. It was very disappointing to me. To self fund for CGM is absolutely out of the question for 99% of people, but it can make such a difference, so it's really a frustrating situation...I REALLY hope this changes in the future.

@@ShesDiabetic What I should have said was my A1C went down after switching from the pump to inhalable insulin. The pump certainly had its pros, but it took too long to correct highs and then would ultimately crash me. It’s great that you are doing well with yours and you have a great channel.

@@ShesDiabetic I’m not sure if the 640g uses the same reservoirs and quick sets as the 670g, but if so, I have quite a few I could send to you.

@@justintime1982 To have those kind of numbers you must be in very tight low carb diet correct? Based on my CGM and BG readings of the last 2 months my HbA1c will be around 4.8 or 4.9 but I do not eat more than 12g of carbs a meal.

Hi I am type1 Diabetic, my morning sugars are usually high can 640g is helpful to correct it? Medtronic person told me that with CGM ,pump corrects high insulin sugars automatically. Is it correct that with CGM and pump our hb1ac always stable?
@ShesDiabetic

Very good question! The 640g does not have any ability to auto correct blood sugars - I believe you have to have the 670g to make use of this within the Medtronic system. The pump will only somewhat correct high blood sugars (it can’t dose for you automatically with meals for example) but it can be useful overnight to give you little doses if you’re running on the higher side! You do need to have the CGM to make it work completely too. I personally am on the TSlim x2 + Dexcom G6 and this combination as significantly helped me achieve better overnight numbers - highly highly highly recommend!! I hope this helps you and that you find the best combination for you!! 💙

670g is pointless without the Medtronic sensors, and she uses the Dexcom G6, which isn't compatible with the 670g.

@@ShesDiabetic My Medtronic MiniMed 670G system is at home on my dinner table. I'm waiting to hear back from the trainer to schedule my first appointment. I didn't have to pay cash fortunately but googled it just out of curiousity=$8,000! They are calling it the world's first closed loop system. It's my first pump. I've been on the Freestyle Libre CGM for a while now but it doesn't even have an alarm. I passed out at home a while back. The second time in 21 years.

The amount of cuts in this video almost makes it epileptic. :( But thanks for the effort. Also, if so many people in your family have it - ever considered a MODY genetics test? Worth it! Oh and CareLink is a huge privacy risk, would avoid.

Thanks for your constructive criticism. I'm still getting to grips with KZitem and am trying my best. I've not done the MODY genetics test, but I have heard of it and will look further into it once things are a little more back to normal. And thanks for the tip on CareLink!

reda bahri I’m sorry I can’t answer this question because I got my pump funded on the NHS in the UK. Every country is very different in how it funds/charges for insulin pumps. I would encourage you to speak with your health care professional to find out more. I hope this helps!
