This was an absolute delight! On behalf of thousands of viewers I implore you, please make a sequel to this one. I assure you this video is a spark of light in a drab and weary world. It sort of like a scene from a John Huston film but better! The view opens with the warm glow of lamplight illuminating a cozy library, the backdrop of shelves filled with well read leather bound books, in the foreground a wooden table filled to the brim with meerschaum pipes of all shapes and sizes. In strolls the narrator, a professorial figure holding a steaming cup of coffee, aged pipe in hand ready to take the viewers on a journey through time and knowledge. The narrator lights his pipe, a halo of smoke drifts in the air, and off you go on a trip through learned history. I walked away not only with knowledge of how to enjoy one of these smoking pieces of art, but the joy of taking a moment to pause and savor the life behind it as well.

I finally set aside some time to watch this video (without interruption), and it was well worth the time! Thank you for dispelling the myths about meerschaum pipes. I had assumed that a lot of the information that I had heard about them was someone's personal preferences and not based in fact. Based upon your experiences, that turned out to be true. I bought two meerschaum pipes as part of an estate sale (of a total of 22 pipes). The average cost worked out to be about $6.00 per pipe. A great deal! They aren't high-end pipes, but now I know I can smoke them without any hesitation or being overly cautious. You packed so much information into this video that I will watch it again to pick up the little bits of advice that I may have missed. Thank you Mark, and enjoy Easter, Slim

I love a meer. I just got my second one. It was previously owned and had a really old and thick cake in the bowl. I sanded it down past all the scratches through the grits and reamed and sanded inside the bowl then I waxed it with beeswax and shined it really well with a glasses cloth. I paid 45 dollars for it on eBay. Just smoked my first bowl in it last night and it was a delight. I’d say it was probably a couple hundred dollars new. First time in a while I haven’t had buyers remorse over a pipe. I’m a happy piper about that purchase. Cheers!

This is one of the most helpful videos about Meerschaum-pipes I have seen to this day. Bravo!!! for killing the myths and false information about these beauties! I started with my first Meerschaum very careful and following all the "good advices" (glove and all) and had very little joy smoking it. All the talk how careful you have to be with them is rubbish! Funny story: Years ago my wife once threw my first Meerschaum at me in anger (and missed me ;-) and it did not break nor was scratched at all, although hitting the wall behind the computer desk. The only thing preventing me to smoke it for some years actually was, that the mouthpiece fell behind the furniture and I could not find it, until we moved the the thing it was hiding behind a few months ago. After a little cleaning off the dust, it just fitted perfectly again and is now back in action. I don't have as many Meerschaums as you do ("only" 4), but I definitely will buy a few, if I get the chance (and the money ;-) Best wishes Michael

Love the channel. I never have to relight. I only clean my pipe every third bowl. I smoke coins, loose, and flakes. Packing a pipe just comes naturally to me. You can feel with your fingers, and with your draw if you have packed correctly. I don't treat my pipes like jewelry either. My favorite pipe now is a Savinelli Hercules billiard. Would love to have a meerschaum, never tried one.

Just found this video. I have started pipe smoking again in my 50s after taking 20 years off. I smoked a pipe in my 20s and early 30s. I have a couple meerschaums, and when I saw this video I dragged out my old work pipe from my old pipe box -- a very small meerschaum (10 cm stem) with thin walls, bowl maybe 1.5 cm deep and a little wider than your little finger. It is a human hand holding an egg-shaped bowl. It packs what would be about a third of a bowl in a normal briar. Good for putting in the briefcase and enjoying after lunch or tea in the afternoon. I have never babied it. I fill it and smoke as much as I want (or have time for) and tap out what is left, run a pipe cleaner through it and throw it back in the little case. It is scratched a little, with dings and a scorched rim and has a glorious color. I think I paid something like thirty dollars for it in the early 90s. The stem is a bit loose, but it doesn't fall off. These things last a good long time and need no special care. You are 100% correct in all of this you have said. Thanks for sharing this video.

Thanks for the information! You have inspired me to buy my first meerschaum pipe. I’ve been smoking corn cobs for the last 10 years. They work really well, but I absolutely hate breaking them in. The birch shanks make the smoke taste terrible for the first 20 or so bowls. That being said, if you haven’t tried a genuine Missouri meerschaum corn cob, I highly recommend trying one out. They can take a lot of abuse, the smoke is very cool and they look really nice, especially as they age. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to my new meerschaum. Thanks again, for the inspiration!

My, my that is quite the collection you have there, seems like someone got a touch of the PAD illness. Nice video though I am envious of your meerschaums I have a nice collection myself or the start of one. But I have yet to acquire a meerschaum yet. And I agree with you on the whole pipe looking new all the time topic, I prefer the nice worn look to it, you know not trashy looking but not new, used would be the word I'd use. It helps give it character in my opinion and it kind of just makes the pipe feel like it's yours, kind of like breaking in a new chair. Good video by the way, just found your channel today.

Back in the 1970's, I met a man who happened to be a pharmacist, who smoked Meerschums. He was showing me some of his pipes and I asked to see it. He handed it to me and told me don't touch the bowl because the oils from my fingers will affect the natural change in the color of the pipe. This always stuck with me and I usually don't touch my Meerschaum and tend to hold them by the stem.

+Smokin' Briar ...I think, Altinay does somme pretty nice pipes these days...but also Bauer and some brands, who get their models done by Altinay...John Aylesbury for example...but you can also take a look at Rattray`s pipes...but take care of the size...you better reach out for an "L" or "XL"...otherwise you could be surprised, how small they are... But if you buy in a shop...there are also many good pipes, without a "brand"...just done by an unknown turkish craftman...these often have very fair prices...and a good quality too... Take care! Mark

I've always smoked briars but steered ckear of Meerschaums because I thought the maintenance and handling would be too much trouble - and who wants to hold a pipe in Mickey Mouse gloves...? For me, the pleasing shape of a pipe in the hand is a significant part of the enjoyment. However, when I saw this excellent, no nonsense vid by an experienced and knowledgeable pipe man - I decided to get a Meer and smoke it in the ordinary way, i.e. enjoying handling it. The pipe is taking on colour beautifully and I enjoy it so much that I now have 3 Meers and I am so grateful to Mark for turning me on to sea foam.

Love meerschaum pipes. Love the feel, the smoke, and the coloring. Nice video. Just found your channel, so i will be looking around to see what else you're chatting about regarding pipe smoking. I myself like to smoke an English tobacco (like 965) in my briars and a flavored tobacco (like a cherry-brandy), which has a bit more moisture, in my meerschaums. Cheers!

Think we'll see an increase in the price of Meerschaums due to the political situation in Turkey?
@bremenpipesmoker6571
8 жыл бұрын
Wel...that's hard to say. Prices for Meerschaum raised up during the past. The reason was, that along with the incredible economic expansion (average income is about 5 times more than 15 yeras ago) it got more and more difficult, to find workers, willing to dig the Meerschaum for low income... But it's not hard to forcast, that economy will be affected by the political situation...so prices could rather go down again. I don't think, the government will do any restrictions on Meerschaum export...why should they...? Only if the EU starts any sanctions...there will be problems then... Take care! Mark

i love your approach to smoking! Im new to pipe smoking but im a veteran in human behavior, and ESPECIALLY human behavior when they’re members of some sort of community. Whether its the gun community, knife community, guitar community, or the pipe smoking community, the human behavior is the same! In every single community, there are idiot myths that are passed on from generation to generation, and it has no basis in logic but rather pseudoscience driven instead! Its insane! And the pseudoscience based myths only gain more power because it has “tradition” attached to it. But guys like you are in these communities too and they always set the record straight, and just say ut like it is without any dumbass pseudoscience, traditional, nonsense myths. I started smoking a pipe 2 weeks ago, and i already have my eyes open to these “rules” im gonna have thrown my way. And i already see that aromatic smokers are “less sophisticated”, i see that you “MUST” rotate your pipes and “MUST” wait 24hours before smoking it again (which is dopey and makes no sense). And so even though im new to pipe smoking, im coming into the hobby with a logical head and i already know what i like and what i want. I like aromatics, and i really want one of these meerchaum pipes, because it seems to me that these meerschaum pipes give a consistent, clean tasting smoke, and thats all i give a fuck about. I want to be able to enjoy the wonderful vanilla flavor of my favorite otc (captain black dark) tobacco the whole way through, and if that means i gotta get a metal pipe, ill do it, if that means i gotta get a ceramic pipe, ill do that. I do like peterson pipes (design wise) and i love wood pipes, BUT, if its true that theres a chance it will be damaging the pipe if i wanna smoke bowl after bowl, i dont wnat it. And besides, i love the smooth look of the meerschaum material when its new AND when its smoked heavily out of! it kinda “ages” beautifully IMO

Great information about meerschaums. I don't own one but after watching your video it's on my bucket list. Of all the pipes that you've smoked, the meerschaum that you smoked in this video is my favorite. Can you please provide the brand or information as where I can get one? Thanks for all of the great videos on pipe smoking and the local history of Bremen. Have you ever considered doing a video on some of the books that are in your library? They look rather old and very interesting too.

+Frank Cava Hello Frank! Many thanks for watching and your good words! This pipe is a John Aylesbury (about 12 years old) with a custom built stem...unfortunately not available any more...but perhaps, you just watch out for an Altinay (they do a lot of classical models...)...and make it an "XL"... And ... good idea...perhaps one day, I gonna show one or two very special books, I have in the library...thanks for that - anb be well! Mark

I love your philosophy of acceptance of wear and smoking pleasure over museum-artifact like care for what is ultimately a tool meant to be used. I recently ordered my first meershcaum pipe in the form of a Falcon bowl and aluminum stem. I picked up a vintage Briar Falcon in great condition at a local antique shop and it reignited my interest in well designed pipes. This video is as enjoyable as it is informative and as for myself I seem to have the same feelings toward the treatment of such tools. Not abuse, but not disproportionate reverence either. Thank you and have a smoke for me!

Hi Mark: I know that this isn't the type of video that you prefer to do, but..... thank you, it is much appreciated. Very informative, and helpful. I noticed the subject, so I fired up the Peterson meerschaum, with some of the Vincent Manil-medium, and enjoyed it. To me, more cigar-like, in taste, compared to the La Brumeuse, which I found to be more herbal/minty/floral. There you go..... as you said.....the beauty of the meerschaum pipe......the flavors!!! BTW, a nice library you have there. Do you often sit back, relax, smoke, and listen to some nice music in that room? Be Well, my friend. Ed

+GrandpaCavendish Hello Ed, my friend! Thanks a lot for taking such a long time... :-) Yeah...you right...its not absolutely my favorite kind of video...but nevertheless...it was a topic, that was close to my heart....but wasn`t easy, to keep it short... :-) Again: Your Peterson is more than wonderful...and it deserves, to be smoked as often as possible.... Glad, the Manil found its way...and you like it...perhaps I gonna do another "manil-pressing" with some Latakia one day...then I`ll send you a sample... This place, you saw in the video is my working place, where I write my books and articles, lessons etc....mostly in the hours of the night, when everything around is quite and (this side of the world...) asleep....the chair for coffe and pipe on the afternoon is some meters away and allows me a look on my little collection of books...perhaps I gonna do a video one day from this direction...lets see... Take care, Ed! And be well! Mark

@Bremen Pipe Smoker Absolutely loved this video so I bought my very first meerschaum for my collection and was looking forward to trying it so much however when i lit up the pipe and got it going i got some very funky taste which ive never have before so im wondering if that will just fade after a couple of smokes or does it stay like this? I thought youd get a very clear smoke out of it. Do you, or anyone else have any experience with meerschaum pipes like this? It is definitely a block and not a pressed pipe so that cant be it. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

How is that possible for German Meerschaum Schnitzers to acquire meer material? I thought it’s strictly forbidden to export from Turkey? Do they purchase it “half-made”, or have ppl to bring them over in their cars? :) Could be a sensitive topic, but I’m interested and perhaps someone can answer.

I always enjoy your videos, and this one is no exception. It does however raise a question. Do you have a particular brand or brands that you would recommend to someone who has never ventured into the world of meerschaum pipes?
@bremenpipesmoker6571

+Jon Ooten Hello Jon! ...well...for me, purchasing a Meerschaum is always some kind of "hunting"...because every piece is so unique. Even, the major brands, like Altinay or Bauer, cant make sure, that the pipe, you get is really exact (or at least very near) to the model, they present online or in catalogues... So, the choice is always limited by the fact, that every piece is unique...and thats the reason, why I just pick them in the shops. And so, I normally don`t have the "luxury" of a favorite brand. But besides that, my experience is, that (in the moment) Altinay provides a pretty good quality...Bauer also of course. There also many pipes under differen`t brands (like John Aylesbury for example)... many of them are done by Altinay too (Aylesbury)...others by hired craftmen in turkey. There is one thing, you should really take care of: the size....my opinion is, that there is a trend of making the pipes smaller (..and even smaller..LOL)...so, if you order, you better take a "Large" or more...otherwise it could be surprisingly small. Hope, that was of some help... Take care - and be well! Mark
