Onesmas Kamau, had a dream of becoming a police officer. Along the way, he discovered he had a hidden musical talent.
Caught in between being a police officer and following his musical career the 24-year-old chose both.
At Nyeri Medium Prison, King’ong’o he is known by the name Police Constable Kamau. On stage he is Onesih, The Kirinyaga Kid.
“I can be both. I am both. For me music is a talent and my job is a passion I have always had since I was a young boy,” Onesih says.
The 24-year-old has been a musician in uniform for three years with the support of his family and seniors at work. Recently, he finally got clearance from the Kenya Prisons officials to perform in official uniform.
“This is a big deal for me and my career because I was unable to perform in uniform due to some restrictions at work. But I always felt that performing in uniform is a unique form of branding and also a representation of who I am,” he explains.
His opted for the stage name Onesih the Kirinyaga Kid, to identify himself to his peers and maintain touch with his homeland Kirinyaga where he was born and raised till he moved to Nyeri for work in the Prisons.
Currently he has nine songs out and will be releasing his first official video later this month. Some of his hit songs are Ikue Ikue, I made it, Wendo, Siko Ithaa and Njeri. His specialty is in Kapuka, rap and afro-pop.
