Jēkabpils is one of the ten cities of Latvia in the southeast region. It is located on both banks of the Daugava in both Sēlija and Latgale.
It has developed thanks to the activities of rafters and fishermen, and in 1670 Duke Jacob granted this settlement the rights of the city and the name Jēkabmiests.
Jēkabpils is a major transportation hub that handles cargo and distributes traffic flows between Latvia, Russia, Belarus, and Lithuania.
The population is 23,656, making it one of the most important intermediate points between Riga and Daugavpils.
History
The city as we know it today was formed only in 1962 after the construction of a new bridge over the Daugava, linking Krustpils on the right bank and Jēkabpils on the left bank.
Krustpils is the oldest part of Jēkabpils, which was first mentioned in the writings as early as 1237, when the bishop of Riga built a castle near Asote. In later times, a large number of refugees from the Second Northern War and Russian Old Believers built an urban area, which on February 12, 1670, received the name Jēkabmiesta. During the division of Poland in 1772, Krustpils, which belonged to the province of Inflantia, and in 1795, Jēkabpils, which belonged to the Duchy of Kurzeme and Zemgale, were incorporated into the Russian Empire.
There is a version that says that Empress Catherine I of Russia was born here.
