We had a jewish neighbor in the 80s, and we always looked out for each other. They had a beautiful rose garden and I would keep an eye on it when they were on vacation. They finally moved to the Fairfax area and i helped them move. Very kind people.

I enjoyed watching this documentary. It explains why my father's cousin was raised in a semi-traditional Jewish lifestyle, even though my grandfather's brother, her father was raised in Boyle Heights as a Christian. My grandfather's brother must have been impressed by the Jewish community so much that he married a Jewish woman from Chicago. My understanding is Chicago has it's own established Catholic community much like Los Angeles. My grandmother who was raised in the City Terrace area said she remembers the pickle barrels while she was growing up on Brooklyn Avenue and how she took tap dancing lessons from an elderly Jewish couple trained in the vaudevillian style.

When I look back at my 3rd grade class photo from 1957 at Lorena St. elementary school, I appreciate the racial diversity now more than then. Every morning we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and felt ourselves to be a part of a great nation, unlike today where sense of tribalism is being indoctrinated into children.

❤❤❤. Evergreen by Naomi Hirahara. 1947 the Japanese Americans are sent to camps and released and go to Chicago and return to Little Tokyo and find Bronzville a black community The Jewish families move out, the mob, the KKK, the 100/442 Japanese American soldiers “Go for Broke”. And Hammer Japanese American Zoot suites from Chicago. Great book about that time and map in book. Enjoy great story …. 😢
