TO NEW PLANT-LOVING VIEWERS: I am not a plant expert and do not claim to be one! I run a beauty and lifestyle channel, but really enjoy tending to plants in my home, and my subscribers had asked to see a little tour of my houseplants :) Please don't place your expectations of planty-perfectionism on this video! I may not know all the names of my plants, but I love them all the same, and they still bring me a lot of joy, and that's what matters! I absolutely appreciate being informed of the names of those I'm unsure of, as it helps me learn, but please don't be a wet blanket :) If you're feeling annoyed at my plant-ignorance, go tend to your own plant babies as I'm sure they'll make you feel better haha x

I have been so caught up in life that I forgot how I love plants. The pandemic slowed me down and one day I was sitting in my living room it hit me what my life and house was missing. Greenery. I took a cutting from a plant at work as well as an orchid I had at work that was given to me and brought them home. I instantly felt better. Plants are definitely therapeutic.

I try to write short messages but they end up too long. Feel like I could “talk” with you for hours! I have a plant that belonged to someone i knew as a child. He passed away decades ago. Last week discussing life/plants/perfectionism with a friend after I burned the leaves of a perfect succulent. I decided then that perfection can’t be sustained and the attempt to do so, stresses me. Then realized I enjoy propagating plants from cuttings and raising them and watching them grow. Sometimes I bring home cast off branches i pick up at a garden center, leaves that would otherwise end up in the waste bin. I counted and realized I had over 60 little plants! I strongly suggest reading on gardening for kids learning. While it is messy, having something like a small pot of cherry tomato plant project when they're around 4+ yo can teach a ton about where food comes from, how long it takes, how to appreciate the work gone into it, and of course how to care for something that requires maintenance. Gardening as a mental health benefit is also very researched topic. It doesn't mean you need an acre of space, just a couple pots by the window are enough.

I thought the same. I have twin three year olds. Becoming a plant mom was the best thing I’ve done this year. It really helps your house feel more relaxing and it relaxes me to care for them. I even have poisonous plants in my bedroom. I tell my sons that they are my babies and not touch them but to look at them. They love them and help me repot the others. And the help outside with the garden. I love it. But I still say no to pets lol.

Once a plant has rooted in water it can still be transferred to soil. Many of the water roots will die back or branch into soil roots. The succulent you had was a low light haworthiopsis hence why he didn't like the full sun aspect. Looked very thirsty too. Good luck with your collection. It's great!

5:39 is an NJoy pothos aka snow queen epipremnum aureum, This is not the marble queen although both are the same as devil's ivy. The difference is that marble queen has bigger leaves and streaks whereas snow queen has smaller leaves and the variegations are more patterned like melting snow.

@@ArnaAlayneMorton Oh and regarding the succulent on top of the elephant, that's a haworthia. One of its unique traits is that it is one of the few (if not the only) succulents who does not like direct sun. It does well in bright but indirect/no direct sun spaces. Oh yes that's an arrowhead plant! Aka Syngonium. It's actually a vining plant so as it matures it'll start to vine out. I did hear of varieties that have been cultivated to not vine out but not too sure which one you have (if its a vining or non-vining). re your peace lily have you repotted it? Checked the soil? I have a feeling it has a root rot if it looks ill despite being well-taken care of. And the brown tips on it could be because pf the tap water. All my peace lilies have that. They're a bit sensitive to chlorine in the water so it'll be hard to keep them looking spotless unless you use distilled water. the small plant at 15:01 is a pepperomia obtusifloia variegata AKA a baby rubber plant (NOT related to the rubber tree but yes it's called commonly as a rubber plant). The rubber plant is a pepperomia so it behaves like a succulent (but not a succulent). Likes to dry out from top to bottom before you water them. Roots are very delicate so be careful not to overwater. I let mine dry out like bone dry before watering because its stems and leaves are thick and capable of holding so much water like succulents and snake plants do. The rubber tree is a ficus elastica. The one you have in your bedroom on that $40 planter is called a robusta. It has green leaves and is the closest cultivar to the original rubber tree in nature (native to india i believe).

Peace lilies were difficult for me to keep alive. We had to keep ours separate from our cats but I would tend to it by the book. It looked sad. When my sister moved in, it started to thrive. It perked right up overnight. My sister told me peace lilies liked companionship and conversation. My sister had a green thumb and could make anything grow.

We just purchased some bone meal for ours. I read the browning of the leaves can be from a lack of phosphorus. Fingers crossed it works 😊

you are so right, taking care of plants will take you to a different place. Cause you spend more time with taking care of them, that you forget about the problem you having. It's make you want to get more plants in to enjoy life better. I just adore them. I called them my baby.

I think that second plant is an epipremnum snow queen. It’s actually a type of Devils Ivy and can be propagated in water for new free plants
@ArnaAlayneMorton

Oh great!! Yes I figured it was somewhat related to the Devils Ivy since it has similar leaves and aerial roots etc!! I should definitely propagate it!

Your Peacock Plant (fyi it's called a Calathea Makoyana) did not have a pest making its leaves sticky. That was a watering issue. Most people waaaaay overwater or underwater these plants, but they really just need to dry out to about 70% between waterings. If this was getting too dry, then saturated, you'd get the sticky leaves. Just an fyi. Also, "Devil's Ivy" = Pothos (or more properly Epipremnum).

Yellowing of foliage is a signed of overwatering...and when it's dropping, then turn brown ..that's underwatering..

I couldn’t really see the third plant, the mystery plant, but I think it’s a string of hearts!! I just bought mine. I know you’ll never really see this, but if the leaves are heart shaped, I think it’s String of Hearts

Gorgeous just gorgeous Arna. I completely agree with everything you said about raising plants. 🙌🏻 That and outdoor gardening saved my life as a kid. I have had indoor plants all my life since I was 15 years old-with the exception of the last 2 years. I truly miss them. Thank you for inspiring me. It’s so interesting how many things we have in common! 🥰 🤗

That's actually not true, you can put the propagated plants in the earth and after some time you probably should, I always leave mine in water until they have a lot of roots and then I got them up in an appropriate soil mix. Usually I try to do this before the edges of the leaves start turning brown from a lack of nutrients in the water.

How long has it been since you repotted the peace lily? I know people say peace lilies like to be root bound but I think you may need to pot up a size or divide it. As a beginner I potted a peace lily in way too big of a container but it just grew huge really fast and is still with me years later, I've divided it a few times and they still bloom a few times a year.

I have no idea if this would be of any interest to you, but an art therapy classmate recently posted a directive for us to try that involved leaves. You get leaves of different sizes and shapes and put a thin piece of paper on top. You then take the paper off of a crayon or pastel, turn it horizontally and lightly rub it across the page. The shape of the leaf and the pattern of veins wind up printed on the paper. It's really cool! You can also experiment with using different colors to color different sections of the leaves. Thought maybe it would give you something creative and different to do.

I can also relate to the idea of caring for something else being wonderful for mental health! During a period of severe depression, my parents let me get a pair of guinea pigs. They have helped me recover so well! Caring for them brings me so much joy. They are silly, smart, loving little creatures that are full of personality. My first two had health issues that were totally out of my control (birth defects and a brain tumor, respectively), but the one I have now is an older rescue guinea pig. She's estimated to be about 4 years old, and she was found wandering around a local park. She had health issues that required surgery, but she recovered beautifully and is basically a brand-new piggie.
