American mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer has established herself as an internationally celebrated singer, writer, arts advocate, and teacher.
Operatically, she specialized in the music of Mozart, Berlioz, Rossini and Richard Strauss and is widely admired as a specialist in trouser roles, most notably for her portrayals of Idamante in "Idomeneo", Komponist in "Ariadne auf Naxos", and Octavian in "Der Rosenkavalier".
More recently she notably portrayed Queen Gertrude in "Hamlet", Mrs. Patrick DeRocher in Jake Heggie’s "Dead Man Walking", Marcellina in "Le Nozze di Figaro", and Nellie in Carlisle Floyd’s "Wuthering Heights", the last of which has also been recorded for commercial release.
She has had a significant opera career of 42 years appearing on four continents with nearly every great opera house and orchestra, including as a guest artist at the Metropolitan Opera in leading roles from 1989-2016.
Mentzer joined the faculty of SFCM in 2016. She enjoys mentoring young singers and teaching the importance of vocal health.
