Thank you so much for making these videos. There is so much content for DP's out there but hardly any that's accessible to lighting. Please, please keep going.

This is so helpful. Your setup was great. So simple and something I would've not thought of myself. Very good. Please keep making videos.

The M8 result at full flood was more natural and appeared less "lit." The Joker result was much more directional and seemed a bit less diffuse. Since both were at full flood, I wonder if one wanted the aesthetics of the M8 result (my personal preference in this example), one would have to resort to playing with distance and adding/replacing diffusion... Of course, thanks for the great videos! Much appreciated.

Your surprised reaction with the result was very entertaining. I could literally see you thinking, "wait, could the Joker 800 be as good as an M8??" So fun! But on a serious note, great little test. I'm an old Arri HMI fan myself for sure, but I have grown to love the weight of Jokers. Sometimes, it's just really nice especially when picking up gear from a rental house out of town when you don't have a proper truck.

Hi Christopher, Yes, it's always a nice surprise when bright sources come in smaller, lighter, yet still robust housings!

I realize it wouldn't exactly be the same but you can use lightbanks on the m8 by using chimeras speedring and their banks

Love the setup look and then the thru-the-camera comparison. I wonder if you were getting more spill off of the Joker onto the ceiling for a more flat feel? I thought the M8 gave you a more pleasing light.

Interesting to watch this after a few years of doing this. The window light on frame right was definitely helping to make a more pleasing ratio with the M8, and the lack of flood range no doubt helped the J8 have more punch. But whether it was pleasing or not wasn’t really my goal... not just to compare output in a similar set up. Regardless, I’m not the best person to do tests, even though I do do them. I should stick to lighting scenes:) Hope you are able to get out there soon to make up your own tests!

@@meetthegaffer Don't stop your tests/comparisons. They are interesting and useful. And my background is lifestyle photography so I guess I'm always looking for things that are "pleasing" for better or worse.

The globe will have more to do with color then anything else. There are a host of factors including the diffusion itself and the bounce. More important then the front side is the user side. Things like: made in Germany vs USA, Usable spot flood range vs knob rotation (Arris have a full flood dead spot) Removable front end vs fixed, hot re-strike (this tends to plague the 800 joker) dimming vs non, turning on at head vs non, head feeder construction (length, number of conductors, molded connector vs non, and ease of repair) weight, balance, globe life, ability to shelve, etc etc.

Thanks! It's it just me or does the M8 have a softer, more pleasing look? Maybe it's the added output of the J8 that makes it look harder?
@meetthegaffer
8 жыл бұрын
Exactly. A heavier diffusion in front of the J8 would help smoothen things out. But to your point, the M8 has the advantage of a larger spot-flood range. So really it's probably more fair to say that they can both be made to have similar output by spotting in the M8 to mimic the J8, due to the J8 having a somewhat limited spot-flood range. They are more similar than different in terms of output and I'm glad to have both! Thank you for watching and providing feedback.

Looks like you had the j8 in spot, is your zoom Beamer also backwards to where spot is actually flood? I just got mine today, either I got a faulty unit or the beam quality is just designed that way, there is a big outer beam on mine, and spot is actually flood

That comparison was 6 1/2 years ago. It’s been a while since I used it in that configuration. The J8 is a little spottier than the M8 right out of the box, if memory serves. I hope it works well for you.

@@meetthegaffer thanks Luke, would you say you are done with HMIs mostly since the 1200d?

I still have a couple joleekos, but they have not been used too often this past year. Beyond that, I will still rent larger HMI’s like 4K and above. I sold my M18’s and M8. They are still great lights and rent well, they just don’t fit in my inventory anymore.

hi, Luke. is there any situation where you would prefer the lens system over the zoom system when working with the joker 800? thanks
@meetthegaffer

I could see where someone might want to have the elongated squeeze of light that certain lenses create. Some people may like the fresnel lens too. I’m usually using it like a PAR, so the rounded pattern of the zoom, whether wider or tighter, is good for me. Does that help?

What is the colour accuracy of these bulbs?
@meetthegaffer

Good question! Neither unit was outfitted with a new bulb for this. So you need to take it in the spirit it was presented, which is here are two guys pulling out a couple units to compare them as though they were out in the field, rather than a clinical examination of two fixtures in a lab😉

I thought you were commenting on the comparison btwn the J8 and M8. The 600d does not have a bulb, of course, and it’s color is pretty close to bang on. The HMI can be dimmed slightly and gelled to be where you want them depending on your ballast and life of the bulb. Different types of units, different variables to contend with.
