Florida has two species of Cypress (Taxodium);
1) Pond Cypress, Taxodium ascendens
2) Bald Cypress,Taxodium distichum
Both species are found growing in submerged to wet soils. Pond Cypress is typically found in shallow ponds, wet savannas, and along blackwater streams and creeks. Bald Cypress is usually found along rivers, bottomland swamps and lake margins.
FNPS Director of North Florida Programs, Lilly Anderson-Messec discusses the key characteristics to differentiate these species from a stream in Santa Rosa County.
Note: there is actually a third species of Taxodium in North America that occurs in Mexico with a couple of populations above the border in Texas; Montezuma Bald Cypress, Taxodium mucronatum.
