It's out! Check it out here: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2563686126 And finally, I want to add to the existence of this project in the first place and a few answers: It is *not* just a light and particle "enhancement". It's a whole re-worked session that fixes all broken models, inconsistencies with the shots, missing animation (such as Soldier's upper face and eyes), organization of all Shots per Model, Lights, Particles and Cameras, enhanced models and some other additions. You could say this is a "Meet the Soldier Enhanced" session. The original session was beyond broken from any standpoint (very old session files tend to break overtime), and I just wasn't happy with the result. So I took it upon myself to fix all the possible issues and preserve the session in its full quality, *up to todays standards*. Forsome, the particles were off-putting. I'd like to say that yes, this was a personal choice, but that's a custom parameter you can enable/disable on your renders. I used them here since I had them installed at the time and it looked nice, however the video itself is not the main scope of the project; the re-worked session file is. As for certain edits made to the camera/lighting/shutter speed (or motion blur), standards have changed since 2007 (the year the original animation was made) so some aspects had to be re-worked to look decent today, *especially the smoothing of the camera movement.* It was very, *VERY* shaky and "stuttery" at 60 fps, very noticeable and distracting. This is mostly a result on how the original camera animation was recorded; with mouse movement, which is fine on its own, but in classic SFM fashion, most animations generated this way have small frame-pacing issues, so the only way to fix them is to re-animate said camera movement. Not ideal but fixes the problem. About the framerate, I only rendered it at 60fps to showcase the animation work that had been done to the session, *it is by no means a statement on how "60 fps is better because more is good" because it isn't.* You can render this animation in whatever framerate you like, this is just one way of showing the project. Same goes for the motion blur. It was so blurry at 60fps you couldn't even make out any details on the scene. *High frame rate does not match well with high amounts of blur*. However as mentioned previously this was a personal choice and can be changed when rendering the animation. With all that said, *think of this project as focused on preserving the session file itself, not my rendition of what a "Remaster" would look like.* The latter is purely personal in terms of its rendition. It might be something that you don't like, and that is perfectly Ok! I like to think this is a community where new ways of looking at things are always welcome by everyone, so I thought I'd do my part and make this project. Well, that's it, thank you all for stopping by and watching the video!

Aside from Sedisock's Meet the Heavy remaster, I would argue, that it's another Meet The Remaster that just makes it inferior to the original. Notice that at 1:58 in the original the background clearly contrasts with the soldier, but in the second one, it matches his skin - and is not blurred. Was all of the aperture in the camera put at zero? The lack of blur looks very jerky in the hand-held scenes. And the cartoony explosion particles, that are really good in the game, as they perfectly match the built-in lighting - not only stand out from the blood particles that have not been replaced, but they just stand out from everything really. Aside from that - the rendering quality is absolutely fantastic, You nailed that!

Thank you for your feedback! Most of the things that have been changed in relation to the original were due to the 60fps 4k adaptation, such as the camera movement and the reduction of the aperture and shutter. I opted to reduce the blur quantity, as high framerate with high amounts of blur don't usually mix well (results in very blury video). The ligthing position and composition were personal choices, as in the end it all comes down to preference. And in regards to the blood particles, I unfortunately couldn't find any good ones. They were either ultra-gory or looked like exploded juice. But thanks again for the constructive feedback!

A really nice remaster with some great little additions added that weren't in the original! @@johanneskohn White. Like at 1:57 the original has more of a yellow/orange tint, as if the sunlight as almost in the evening. The remake here has a more modern "white" sunlight as if it's noon. A noticeable giveaway that a video is made in SFM is that has that orange tint to the lighting. But the lighting here is white because of the light entities OP used since the world light was removed (what gives that orange tint).

I really love this, it's great. My only comment is that I don't understand the omission of focal distance/aperture in the remaster. May be a personal preference but makes cinematics look leagues better.
@SpyKeTF2
3 жыл бұрын
I removed completely the background blur during the "action shots", where Soldier is walking around the map, and kept it only (although somewhat reduced) in the still shots, where he is talking to the camera. The reason behind that is that this video was rendered in 4k 60fps to show its full quality. I usually don't prefer 60fps for animations, as it looks very smooth, but the same applies to the focal distance situation: it looked very blurry, and as such, would fail to reach the goal of showing the full quality of the project. Same with the motion blur. I reduced the shutter speed so that there wasn't so much blur to the point you couldn't even see what was on screen. I hope you understand.

This is honestly a very good reimagining of Meet the Soldier, being more in line with TF2's 1960s "comic book come to life" aesthetic. However, I did notice that the lack of camera shake and blur kind of detracted from the combat sections, making them feel less real and chaotic, more cinematic and game-like. Having the "meet the team" videos feel like real recorded footage from interviews of these people was honestly what really sets TF2 apart from other character-based shooters. My analytical whinging notwithstanding, great work nonetheless!
