Durgabai Vyam and Subhash Vyam are recognized artists from the Gond school of painting, practiced by the Gond Pardhan caste in central India. Subhash Vyam and Durgabai Vyam were trained traditionally in Gond painting by elders in the family. Their paintings often narrate Gond myths and folklores, through a highly schematic design that depict flora and fauna in bright colours with very strong outlines in black.
Although now Gond art is being made on paper and canvas, originally Gond art had been made on the walls, known as Gondi Bhitti Chitrakala (Gond wall art). At Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018, Durgabai Vyam and Subhash Vyam have given another dimension to Gond Bhitti Chitrakala, by making a wall-based installation with paintings on marine plywood, that are cut out in various shapes, outlining the fauna and flora in the folklores.
