A new paper published in the journal Science Advances discusses the discovery of a Late Preceramic megalithic circular plaza at Callacpuma in Peru. Dating to almost 5,000 years ago this structure is made up of two concentric circles of vertically placed megaliths and is thought to have been part of a ceremonial complex. It's features are unusual compared to other circular plazas in the region and it is a rare example from the highlands since such sites are normally found close to the coast. What's also remarkable is its date since it's one of the earliest examples of monumental and ceremonial architecture in the western hemisphere.
