Nohkalikai Story:
The waterfall holds a tragic and intriguing story behind its name.
Legend has it that in a small Khasi village, there lived a young woman named Ka Likai. She was known for her beauty, grace, and love for her young daughter. However, tragedy struck when Ka Likai's husband passed away, leaving her widowed and with a child to care for.
To make ends meet, Ka Likai became a porter, carrying loads of betel nuts to sell in the neighboring villages. Despite her grief, she was determined to provide for her daughter and give her a better life. But her life took an unexpected turn when she met a kind and caring man from a neighboring village.
They fell in love and decided to marry. Ka Likai hoped that her daughter would have a loving father figure in her life. Unfortunately, her happiness was short-lived. Once married, her new husband's true colors were revealed, and he developed an intense jealousy toward Ka Likai's daughter.
Driven by jealousy and resentment, he devised a wicked plan to get rid of the young girl. One day, when Ka Likai was away working, he brutally murdered the child and cooked her flesh as a meal. Unaware of this horrific act, Ka Likai returned home expecting to see her daughter.
As she entered her house, she found her husband behaving strangely and noticed a strange meat dish prepared. Unaware of the true nature of the meal, Ka Likai sat down to eat. Little did she know that she was consuming the flesh of her beloved daughter.
Shortly after finishing her meal, she searched for her daughter and found her daughter's fingers discarded in a basket. Overwhelmed by grief, remorse, and rage, Ka Likai was consumed by a maddening sorrow. She ran towards the edge of the nearby cliff and leaped into the abyss, ending her life.
It is said that the waterfall was formed by the tears of Ka Likai as she plummeted down the cliff. The cascading water represents her eternal sorrow and serves as a reminder of the tragic tale that unfolded in that small village.
The Noh Ka Likai Waterfalls, with its mesmerizing beauty and haunting backstory, has become a popular tourist destination. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of love, loss, and the profound impact of tragic events on the human spirit.
