MEIKYO (明鏡) - A Shotokan kata. It was practised in Japan even before Funakoshi moved from Okinawa. Meikyo is actually a Shotokan version of Rohai kata with four completely different versions. One version is Matsumura Rohai, and the remaining three are Itosu’s creations: Rohai, Rohai-Nidan, and Rohai-Sandan. Shotokan Meikyo is one of three Itosu’s katas. It was originally practised in Tomari-te school. The word Meikyo is composed of two characters, thus two words: ”clear” and ”mirror”, translating into a ”Clear mirror”. It probably got its name after the starting move where the performer lifts both palms towards the face, which reminds of looking into the mirror.
