What Mel Brooks is doing in this scene, which most commentators here are missing, is satirizing the ridiculous notion that American Indians are descended from one of the lost tribes of Israel. Hence Brooks’ Yiddish dialog. This same ridiculous notion is also satirized in the movie “Cat Ballou” where Cat’s father Frankie is always using the Jewish greeting of “Shalom Aleichem” with his Indian farm hand Jackson Two-Bears.

It's a spoof of how Hollywood often employed Jewish actors to play Natives, instead of actual Native Americans. They kept this practice well into the 70s. I remember Martin Landau playing Mexicans and Indians on old tv Westerns. He was awful lol

@@ericpalacios920 i hadn’t seen Better Call Saul 9months ago, so I wouldn’t have known. They had an Italian actor play the hit man in BCS. But I hadn’t watched the show until a few months ago. Slap me with a wet noodle. But does it really matter what DECADE? The fact is Brooks was spoofing the practice THEN, when the film was actually MADE, in the 70s? Oh, maybe you think everything was made after you born and not before. Let’s squeeze some tiny zits over that, shall we ? LOL

@UNITEONE1 I think what Mel Brooks intimated in the film when he said they are darker than us is that the American Indians were the schvartze. There is much controversy around who are the real Jews and who are the real American Indians. As the man said in the movie The Godfather, what’s the difference between the blacks (paraphrased) and the Indian. There is a lot about history that is fake and these movies hint to a little of the truth merely through comedy.
