My mom bought Melaleuca products from her friend when I was a kid to help her financially, but she never signed up with her. I LOVE their products. My MIL passed away in March 2024. She was signed up with Melaleuca. At the end of March, her next shipment was due, and they were harassing her phone because the payment failed on her upcoming shipment. After the company had emailed her and called her several times, the rep she signed up under finally called and left a msg. I called her back to let her know my MIL had passed away and her response was SHE REQUIRED PROOF OF DEATH to be able to cancel the shipment my MIL was contractually bound to pay for. That was it for me. Never again.

Melaleuca is the crumb trail that led me to the anti-MLM community. I never joined it, but my grandmother was with them and she gave up the last heathy years of her life busting her butt, hoping to leave something behind for her grandchildren because Melaleuca fooled her into believing that this was her own business. When she passed away, they sent flowers. Nobody from her team showed up to her funeral. The business that she had been alluding to for ages ghosted my dad after he tried to find out why they had convinced her that she was surely leaving a flourishing business behind for him to adopt. It added so much stress to an already heartbreaking bereavement. In my grief, I chose to look at them as something to be angry about. The spin tactics would give even my washer a headache 😂. The most they could come up with is, "It has some elements of an MLM, yeah". There's more than just a faint resemblance, sweetie, the main hallmarks of an MLM are there! If their only defense is that it's not an MLM because it doesn't directly copy and paste itself from other companies word for word, their bar is absolutely on the ground when it comes to their understanding (or rather, willingness to admit) to Melaluca being an MLM. But they fully know what they're doing. To the link for "Alice", to hiding the name of Melaluca on the referral website, to the "Whoopsie!" of the recording being deleted because it proved everything Hannah has been saying about MLM's...they are fully aware that they're being deceitful. It was costing me around a 150.00 a month to meet my 35 pts. I just did the cancel and it is not easy you have to download a form and then sign it and send it back to the company and hope that it will cancel before the month is over. I am not sure you know that if you do not go and select things you want they have a backup that they will send you at your expense to help you stay a member. I struggled to find things to buy. I recently did the same thing. Truthfully, I DID like Melalueca’s products, but I knew I was wasting money when I was just putting random things in my cart to meet the product points. ALSO, loyalty dollars can’t be used until AFTER product points are met, so that’s kind of a scam too. My mom is still with them (she signed up under me…I never made more than $20 commission) and will occasionally buy me the stuff I miss, and it helps her reach the product points too. I bet that they have to throw it out every five weeks because it’s not shelf stable 😂😂😂
I was in Melaleuca twice (I've long since repented). One day I compared their expensive shampoo with "better/safer" ingredients to the dollar store shampoo I still had, and found the EXACT SAME INGREDIENTS except for one--tea tree oil. And for the price difference, I could have added an entire bottle of tea tree oil to the cheap bottle and STILL paid less than they were charging. I liked the cleaning products, but you can find comparable products for much less elsewhere. And those 35 "points"? They translate into about $100 a month. So many reasons to stay away.
@KwazyKupkakes

I was wondering if it was $35 or more. They kept saying it ‘was stuff you would buy anyways’ but that’s wrong as the prices are 2-3x more than stores & the products are nothing special. Former Beachbody person here, being in an MLM is such a similar headspace as an abusive relationship. You get to a point where you’ve watched your up line defended it, you now are also in a position to start defending it. It’s that much harder to get out when you’ve invested so much energy demanding others hear how amazing it all is. Anti MLM content is so important because often that’s the first time a person can consume information quietly without feeling the defensive hackles come up.

mannn listening to the call, her saying she hopped around mlm’s and had a garage full of stuff she couldn’t sell is actually so sad. as ridiculous as it all is, they are victims of this too & have been gaslit enough to try to convince others.

I think I've heard that people in cults will often enter a new cult when they leave because it fills that void in their life. A cult and an MLM give the same promise of ease, "don't think about it, let our lifestyle/brand fix your problems".

I've also heard the best way to get someone to change their mind is to present an alternative when you tell them their beliefs are wrong. Like if you say they've wasted their time on this company/brand they're left with a reality they don't want to face, which can make some dig their heels deeper.

You were so kind and non confrontational while speaking honestly and truthfully during that call. I was very impressed. My personality would be very snarky 😂
