I am gob smacked .... I had visited Melbourne several times in the 90's and never really got such a detailed overview of the city. Standard and Wide Gauge confused me. The tram sets were amazing and the width of the streets were just insane. Thank you so much for describing the city train system is such detail. Shame you are not a little older it would of be amazing to see some of these features change over the decades. That is a very special camera.

What a great collection of photos you have captured here Martin! It's amazing the changes that have occurred over the last 10 years and I'm sure the Public Records Office would be interested in some of your material if you haven't already had contact with them. I've been looking through some of my own collection of photos and books/magazines during the last couple of weeks and marvel at what I have seen that no longer exists or has changed beyond recognition. I have similar reservations to you about helicopter flight as my only such experience was with an adventurous pilot in the South of New Zealand almost 40 years ago. Thanks so much for sharing this interesting coverage with us,🙂🙂🙂

I spent 14 years living in the shadow of the Moonee Ponds Creek viaduct (known locally as 'The Trestle Bridge' - I can see my house in both shots. Between trains crossing the bridge and planes coming and going from Essendon Airport, it's amazing the noises that you become totally accustomed to over time. We crossed the trestle bridge on foot many times, both above and on internal catwalks underneath - it's a beautiful structure to see up close. As a child I was always a little jealous that the next viaduct on the line a few kilometres southwest seemed even bigger than 'our' one.

As someone who went to Footscray regularly during the RRL Rebuild Period, I'm glad you got these shots. The new Platform 1 & 2 opened about a month after you took these, in January 2014. I started coming there in I want to say about April that year, by which time the old Platform's 1& 2 had been closed to become 3&4 for the RRL tracks, which opened along with the whole alignment to Sunshine in about July from memory, though it was definitely still a construction mess and hard to get around. I wasn't going there by that point but having used the RRL and been there in the years since, I can say it's been a big improvement on what the old station was like. Crazy to think it will be 10 years soon since the RRL opened. Also crazy to see how new West Footscray looked given how different it looks now, it of course was only about 2 months old at that point (it opened in I think October). One thing I would have mentioned that you forgot though is the new platform that's there now. Finally, I'm glad you took those photos of the Hitachi's. Particularly the 3 sets at Macauley, as it confirms a comment I saw that they were stabled there in I think September 2013. So of the 7 sets that were kept; 3 were at Macauley, 2 at Newport, 1 at Craigieburn and 1 at I think Epping from memory, up until they all were at Newport by 2015. I'm not sure if that set at Craigieburn was the same one used in the farewell tour the following April which I know was stabled there, but I have a photo of what I think is the same set stabled next to a Comeng I think. As for the two at Newport, I think one of them was that set that derailed between Croydon and Moorolbark in January of this year. The other looks like it had been there for at least a year or two prior. Crazy how much has changed in 10 years.
@Taitset
Жыл бұрын
Great observations, thanks! I am pretty sure the Hitachi at Craigieburn would be the one that ran the farewell tour, but they were still occasionally moving around a bit then so I'm not really sure. And you're right, I did forget the new platform at West Footscray! Haven't been out that way much lately.

Another day, another new Taitset video adding another great string to the channel's bow. How can you tell which specific train you are looking at from so far away? No doubt the trained eye can spot different classes, models and such but you seemed to be giving most of the locos their unique IDs?
@Taitset
Жыл бұрын
Great question! Some of them are easy to work out because they're the only one in a certain condition - like when I point out X31, it's the only X class painted in the VR blue & gold colours. The S class at Dynon was one of a few in pacific national colours, but I know where the others were at the time based on other photos. Most of those locomotives I identified back in 2013 when I took the photos, so I can't remember all the reasoning, but some of them may have just been well known to be in the area at the time.

Great video as always Martin! So happy to support the channel too on Patreon! The style of this video with the photos from ten years ago reminds me of the photo series on Marcus Wong's blog where he looks back at photos taken 10 years prior. It helps that you've been out there snapping Melbourne for a while now, I can't wait to see what other photos you have. I loved seeing the old Hitachi's still kicking around in 2013, and it's odd to think that the RRL wasn't even finished yet when it feels like it's been here way longer. Looking forward to your next video, always interested by the topics you discuss whether it's my local Upfield line (loved the bike video, good time capsule given the LXRA), Hurstbridge line or even in the sky!

That Boeing facility is where they manufacture flaps and other control surfaces for the 777 and a couple other planes. Some very fancy fabrication methods let them make complex shapes out of exotic composites. So no, not manufacturing whole airframes but definitely making important and technologically complex components for them. BTW what was "the thing that all Melbourne railfans will know"?

Nice photos of Melbourne seen from the sky, Martin! Oh, and at 9:40 - The Spirit of Tasmania actually started departing from Geelong in October, 2022. Some of my notes listed below; 2:03 - That’s ARTC maintenance for ya! 13:08 - Aurizon abandoned intermodal work in December 2017, only to go back into it after an agreement with TGE (Team Global Express) to run services for them again this year (2023). 13:49 - I’m pretty sure those wagons are standard gauge now, I think I saw the same ones when they were being loaded up with ballast at Maroona, with both EL Class locos at both ends. 14:27 - Yep, they’re still there. Still rotting. 14:49 - All for a tunnel project that hasn’t been going well so far… 16:39 - Yes Martin it did escape being repainted, but at some point it was stored at UGL in Spotswood, and sadly got the chop around January / February in 2020. It’s odd for me and some of the others to see a locomotive more newer than a G Class or 81 Class to be scrapped. And all to say.

Forever impressed at the extensiveness and cohesiveness of the Melbourne network. It puts London to shame. Also it seems rare to get a 3 car set? Besides the shuttle mentioned, do they ever run 3 cars?

The only remaining regular use of three car sets is on the Williamstown shuttle mentioned here, and also the Camberwell-Alamein shuttle. Up until the late 00s/early 10s they used to use three car sets off peak and on weekends.

Home of the 777 was (I assume still is) a bit more than an R&D facility. I did some work onsite in 2014 and they manufactured components for Boeing aircraft including 737, 777, 787 - mainly composite wing components such as ailerons, rudders, flaps and a 787 component called a "flaperon". There were also some US military aircraft components behind security walls which the likes of me were not permitted to observe.

Arising from 9:30, it is rare to see any rail filming of Princes Pier apart from this that I came across on KZitem. Some rare footage taken of a migrant train from Princes Pier or less likely Station Pier Port Melbourne in 1956. kzitem.info/news/bejne/lI5tnXmMqqGVe34 Diesel B class locomotive used or other diesels as these usually ended up at the Bonegilla migrant camp and there were reasons not to have the migrants change trains. So direct trains provided.
