For all of those who think tape gets old, well yes, but right now ( before I turned the volume down to watch this amazing little video) I'm listening to a brand new old stock reel to reel tape of Brazil 66's greatest hits- it's over 40 years old if a day. I'm playing it on a 1959 Voice of Music HiFi reel to reel that I found in the trash, it looked brand new 5 years ago when I found it. Undoubtedly original tubes. I am using the line out. The sound is extremely pure, not hissy- just a Mellotron!

Wild engineering. It boggles my mind sometimes. Can you imagine if the machine ate those tapes, and you had to sort all of that out? What a nightmare. I love that they had the rhythms sampled as well. Like a cheap Casio keyboard.

Jesus Christ, David Nixon ! He's the last person I would have expected to have had a hand in the Mellotron 's development. I used to love him when I was a kid. Right enough he was a magician, and the Mellotron is a magical instrument,so maybe not so strange after all ! Aye, the Interweb's a wonderful thing !

Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones played a lot of Mellotron in their songs. The model he used is the one being demoed in this video. For examples of Brian's Mellotron work check out 2000 Light Years From Home (strings); She's a Rainbow and We Love You (trumpet/brass); Jig-saw Puzzle (high pitched space ship sound); and Citadel (flat sounding flute). Elton John also used one for his 'trumpet' solo in Daniel and other songs on GBYBR.

The Moody Blues used them on all their music. Mike Pinder is the one who introduced the Beatles to the 'tron (he worked for the company that made them while playing keyboards for the Moodies). In one concert, the tapes had gotten tangled and they played Bugs Bunny cartoons while they untangled the reels.

Great historical document. Love to see people performing glissandi on a Mellotron - such a fragile instrument prone to wear and tear... the later model M400 made the Mellotron sounds timeless. ...Nights in white satin (daa-daa-daa-daa-daa-daa-daaaa). ...Let's skip the news boy (Genesis, 1976 Wind and Wuthering album, "Blood on the Rooftops"). And that 8-choir "Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats".... haunting! A classic!

This is most likely a MarkII, which was intended as a home keybard. What we all know and love is the single manual 35 note 1970 Mellotron M400 (usually in white), which was built for musicians who discovered the Mellotron for prog rock (such as Mike Pinder).

The sounds were recorded with actual session musicians, each note was recorded chromatically and the tapes were set up in 6 x 3 "banks" for 18 sounds overall same technique for the rhythms, and they had to be recorded in time with each other usually the players would be slightly out of tune after so many notes, so the instrument would be out of tune with itself. The tapes were then assembled at the factory into the 'tron arguably the first "sampler"

Each tape has three tracks. Each track has a different instrument or instruments recorded. The different instruments are playing the same note for a given tape. There are three buttons above the keyboard labeled A, B, and C. Pressing a button switches all tapes to the corresponding A, B, or C track, producing different sounds. It takes a second or two for the switch to complete. Keys can not be pressed while the tracks are switching. The buttons will light when it is safe to play.
