I've got the M4000D sound cards 02-03-04-05-06. They all have interesting playbacks. What ticks me off is some of the sounds on the various cards aren't keyboard responsive. I'm guessing Marcus just put them in as fillers. Long story short....my preferences in sound card order is 02, then 05, then 03-04-06 in that order. From what I understand, there is a card 07 which is loops of the band sounds. Anyways, I have enough sound cards to keep me plentifully busy. I hope this helps your guys out.

High John.... thank you for putting up all these mellotron videos up have been watching over the years and they are invaluable !.....the intro was way too short with the solo harp was just getting into it 🙂 I am about to take the plunge on the rack finally and am hoping you might be able to answer a quick question. I want to use my Nord Piano as a controller using a split on the keyboard in the lower registers to control the mellotron . Do you have to play a midi keyboard at the exact octave to correspond with the limited 3 octave input to the mellotron or is there a way to set this up in the mellotron or some external box as I may well be wanting to play The Nord an octave lower than the mellotron for pad accompaniment
@JohnLRice

Thanks much for the kind words, I'm glad you've found my videos useful and enjoyable! 🙂 The keyboard versions of the M4000D can transpose their MIDI output but unfortunately there isn't a built in way to transpose the incoming MIDI stream to the M4000D Rack, or at least that I know of and I just checked again. (I need to send this request to Markus at Mellotron!) It's been an ongoing annoyance for me but I usually work around it by transposing the other synths in my setup when needed (or if recording just record a separate track of Mellotron only etc.) I've often thought/hoped/wished that the MOTU MTPAV rack unit that I use to route MIDI between controllers and synths could to transposition but I just check again and it can't, as far as I can tell? 🤦♂ Inspired by your question I looked around again for a solution and I think I might pick up a MIDI Solutions Footswitch Controller www.midisolutions.com/prodfsw.htm

Out of interest what was your reasoning to go for the Resch instead of a Memotron. Not that I really have the money for either of these at the moment, but I've always been rather indecisive which one I'd rather go for; the Memotron has the slight edge for me with the Berlin School library, but the Resch seems so much easier to use with its two displays.

Not you nativeVS . . .my computer and or me! 🙄 I spent over 30 minutes typing out a huge and VERY detailed response and was almost done . . .then my laptop flipped out or I accidentally hit a key that made the browser go to the next video and I lost the whole thing. 😖😤😭 I can't take the time to redo it . . . basically there were 4 points and these were the deciding factors many years ago, shortly after the M4000D had first been introduced: 1) Sound: I liked the sound better of the M4000D but at the time I was only comparing online demos. 2) Price: the M4000D was a much better value. Full keyboard only $1899 where the Memotron rack was $1500. Prices have gone up a lot since then though. 3) Ease of Use: M4000D powers up in 3 seconds and 100 to 200 sounds are instantly available. Memotron loaded from CDROMs and had confusing menu system (it's better these days though) 4) Looks: I like the M4000D looks a lot better.

@@nativeVS 😎 No apologies necessary in the slightest! 🤗 I just needed to vent at that moment. I responded to an Instagram post as to why the M4000D expansion cards are so expensive, and and they are! But if you compare the price per sound which is about $5 for the M4000D expansion to the Memotron expansion packs which are about $8 per sound, the M4000D are a better deal. The plus side of the Memotron expansion packs is that they are either 12 sounds for $99 or 24 sounds for $198 so you can pick a smaller more focused set of sounds with most of them being things you might likely use (and with an easier to swallow incremental cash outlay) as opposed to the M4000D packs that are $500 for 100 sounds with a third or more of them probably being things you'll never use?

Awesome demo thanks! Does the rack version have a velocity adjustment? My organ outputs midi velocity but I'm not a piano player so I have no use for it. Just asking since you have a rack version and the manual is very elusive, thanks.
@JohnLRice
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! :-) Yes, there are 3 or 4 levels of velocity response you can set. One setting called . . Off or None . . . makes the response like an organ (and more like an actual tape Mellotron I believe?) where the sounds start at full volume regardless of velocity level, and then the other settings are like low, medium, and high response to velocity dynamics. (from memory, I'm not in front of my gear right now so the names I used might not be exactly correct ;-)

Once you are done, the card with the most "Love" or the least "Don't Care" hashmarks wins? 😉 Also, I know these cards are expensive but if you can afford to spend even more 😳 Mellotron offers card bundles where you can get 2 cards for 20% off or all 3 cards for 27% off. Thanks for watching and commenting, Arianna! :-) I'm not sure on what the thought processes were behind many of these sounds, but keep in mind that many of them were created as far back as the 1950's and might have be created for a specific piece or use and not necessarily intended to be used chromatically from a keyboard. The team at Digital Mellotron took all the original source tapes they could find and did the best job they could to make sense of them and put them in to their modern M4000D instruments. 😎👍 And yes, I love that harp sound as well! If you get a chance listen to my demo of Card 02 as it has lots of great sounds and the Wine Glasses is a particular favorite of mine.

Is there any sonic difference with the rack vs keyboard?
@JohnLRice
3 жыл бұрын
No difference at all as far as I know. It's my understanding that the electronics inside the full sized M4000D keyboard, the Mini M4000D keyboard, and the Rack M4000D are identical.(the Mini doesn't have the balanced outputs like the full sized and Rack does, so I don't know for sure if the circuit boards are identical and the related balanced output circuitry is just not connected to jacks or even populated on the PCB or if it's a different PCB) The full sized M4000D does have poly after touch so performances with it could be made to sound different than the Mini and Rack versions? The Mellotron Micro has a similar but different set of electronics in them, and Mellotron doesn't even refer to it as the "M4000D Micro" so there may be a slight difference in sound, but I think it's somewhat subtle. The Micro does have less options and features available in the menu for customizing the sound as compared to the larger models so that's something to consider and of course the Micro can't use the expansion cards. I own both the Rack and Micro versions, and while I haven't tried to do a direct comparison/analysis, I'm guessing the general sound quality is extremely close, probably like trying to compare two different brands of equally priced AD/DA converters or similar, where it might take well controlled scientific double blind testing to reliably hear the difference?

Next up is probably Card 02 but I need to spend more time with all the cards. I kind of wish card 2 and 3 were reorganized so that one of them had only lead/solo sounds and the other had only rhythm/accompaniment sounds so people could buy more of what they might use. (I personally will seldom use the rhythm/accompaniment sounds and between all the cards I have tons of them now! ;-) I think card 04 is the most specialized in my humble opinion, unless you really love the low-fi quality of the optical disk sound?

@@JohnLRice I'm about to pull the trigger, i know it's super expansive, but i fell in love with it from the moment i first heard it, then again when i saw it and somehow i now have the money and i want something real, a real instrument, where i can actually touch and feel what i do. I saw today how there is now a comprehensive sampler from IK with some 400 sounds, from all the Mellotrons, the Octagan and the Orchestron and some others and tons of effects and all but ....it didn't do nothing for me. Now perhaps it is my brain telling me, i already love this expansive thing and now there comes this plugin version for 149$, it can't be as good....i don't know....i know i LOVE the sounds and it is something that i will deeply fall in love with, just as it happened to you i guess. Now, the expansion cards are a bit unfair i think. I wish they would give us the option to put together a unique one, not with every individual sound you want, but at least with the certain groups they are divided in. You know what i mean? I for instance, must have the Gino Vanelli strings from card 03 but i really do not need all the foxtrots and chacha chas, But i would die to get the Orchestron sounds from card 04. I am going to write to Markus and at least ask if sth like this could be possible in the near future, some of these cards have been around for about 10 years now.....so....bu i doubt he will like my idea very much.....i know i know, i'm poor! Okay, if i may, i have one more question, so how is this with the 8 seconds and the sustain pedal? I read under another video, that sustain pedal only lets you hold the sound for 9 seconds. Is that true? I don't really get that.... anyway, i am really looking forward to the day this becomes a reality for me, hope our damn politicians don't do something incredibly stupid in the meantime...well, they will definitely do sth incredibly stupid, but maybe not THAT stupid, greetings from Vienna, lars
