Join us for an engaging discussion on the future of the European right-wing as we explore the power struggles between Giorgia Meloni and Marine Le Pen. We'll delve into what recent election results mean for the political landscape and the implications for cooperation within the EU's far-right factions. Featuring insights from Célia Belin and Arturo Varvelli, with moderation by Lykke Friis.
The European Parliament elections resulted in a landslide victory in France, where the Rassemblement National won 31.37% of the vote. Although the party failed to secure the position of Prime Minister in the national elections, the results demonstrate that the right-wing remains strong in France.
The situation is similar further south in Italy. In the European Parliament elections, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leading her right-wing party Brothers of Italy, received 28.9% of the vote, surpassing the result from the national parliamentary election in 2022.
Despite the rise of the right, power struggles within the EU have already emerged.
Le Pen has allied herself with Hungary's Viktor Orbán and is now set to lead the new right-wing group "European Patriots," while Meloni remains in the ECR group. Meanwhile, the German right-wing party AfD has spearheaded the formation of a third right-wing group, the so-called "Sovereign Nations of Europe." As a result, the right is now divided into three political groups with differing views on a wide range of policy areas, particularly European support for Ukraine.
So, where does the right-wing stand in the upcoming election period? What do Meloni and Le Pen's power struggles mean for the right-wing? How might this affect the European Parliament over the next five years? And what implications could a possible Trump victory have for the balance of power?
Join us as we discuss and analyze the right-wing power struggles in the EU with Célia Belin, Head of ECFR Paris and Senior Policy Fellow, and Arturo Varvelli, Head of ECFR Rome and Senior Policy Fellow. The discussion will be moderated by Lykke Friis, Director of Think Tank EUROPA.
