Jim, here in the States, most of our wheel weights were traditionally made of lead, but since FEMA bought so much ammunition, the price of scrap lead went up, and wheel weights are now made of steel.

You can flux the mix to remove impurities with wax or sawdust to help remove the dross. Also don't use aluminum tools with zinc when casting because it eats them up. Additionally, if you mix lead with zinc it makes a cottage cheese result. You can help separate zinc out from lead with acid on a freshly scratched area to check for effervescence.

@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 KZitem's been deleting any casting videos lately and removing reloading channels but look for Willie Bulletman and Uncle Jim 2 channels for help with zinc casting. We normally have live chats on Saturday on Uncle Jims first channel but it was removed from KZitem this morning. There's a bunch of us out there but we're all being chased around KZitem with different channel names. A lot of us have switched to Rumble as of lately so you can look there for the removed content. To answer your question personally I have not cast with zinc yet but I have with lead they are very similar processes. It seems you're doing everything right but flux with the sawdust or wax and keep the heat down to help with the fumes. You can melt zinc or lead in a cast iron pan with a propane camp stove so you don't have to use that burner to help control the temperatures better and obviously don't use that pan for future cooking. Furthermore lead melts before zinc so if you do have any contamination you can skim off the zinc when it floats on top of the lead. The same is true for foreign materials like steel or brass on wheel weights.
@Farm_fab
2 жыл бұрын
Borax would probably be more reliable in purifying the zinc that what you mentioned.
@williamganley4739
2 жыл бұрын
@@Farm_fab It very well could but the reason for the sawdust or wax is to add carbon that grabs on to the foreign material and makes it float easier that way it can be skimmed off the surface. For lead ingot casting I normally use sawdust for the initial cleaning and wax when remelting ingots before final casting.

@@BensWorkshop the lead in naval brass prevents dezincification and makes for a very machinable alloy while being a lot cheaper than the admiralty brass which is low zinc, high tin and not so free cutting.
