Charming indeed! We can all have our favorites--and who is conducting and the orchestra DOES make a big difference....but for me Yuja's deft touch and clarity must be close to what Felix was himself (about the same size too!). I have loved Serkin in this and No. 2 for many years. It is, after all, such gloriously enjoyable and brilliantly composed music for any fine pianist to tackle.....

I have listened to almost every major artist perform this piece of music. No one, and I mean no one in their prime can do it anywhere close to Serkin. That includes Lang Lang or anyone else.

@@canman5060 I must agree with you. We all have a favorite performer of a specific concerto, but Yuja's Mendelssohn's 1st is superb in my opinion.
a bit rushed and too much pedal in first movement for me. I like the Andre Watts John Williams performance(strong rhythm and clear melody). Also I prefer the finale played by Serkin when he was older live.

I completely disagree as I much prefer this to the Watts-Williams, but this definitely stands in stark contrast to that very straight and simply loud interpretation. To each their own, though. I adore John Williams, especially when he was at his peak with the Boston Pops.

beats Thibaudet/Masur/Leipzig in terms of orchestral integration, which is what too many modern pianists overlook anyway, though the Frenchman gives a more outwardly "brilliant" reading.
