The sub turrets always had less armour than the main turret & hull, making for an obvious Achille's heel for enemy gunners to aim for. For example, the various Soviet T-28 models had frontal armour ranging from 30mm., then 40mm., then 50mm. & finally 80mm. however, in all models, the sub turret armour was only 20mm.

@@Anonymous-zu7dhMBT is a concept, barely a class of vehicle. Like the name said: Main Battle Tank. A “Main Battle Tank” is often referred to the tanks of great powers like the US, Great Britain, France, Germany and the Soviet Union who can afford those kind of fast, heavily armored and high velocity cannons equipped tanks to be used in any role, however lesser powers like Sweden decided to go for an odd design like a Stridvagn 103 as its main tank to be used hence the “Main Battle Tank” designation for the Swede. A “Main Battle Tank” could and would be different depending on the doctrinal thinking of the nation that operates it, for example the latest “Light Tank” of the US Army is the M10 Booker which weight almost as much as a Russian “Main Battle Tank” like the T-72B3, T-80BVM or the T-90M while the Russian “Light Tank” is a 2S25 Sprut-SD which weighs just over half of that of the M10 Booker with a larger gun, thinner armor with no additional armor modules unlike the M10 Booker which could be used as a “Main Battle Tank” for most armed forces around the world.

Tank destroyers weren't really a dead end though? They just changed, they're no longer old tank hulls with bug guns slapped on, they're now built on lighter, cheaper vehicles, usually mounting ATGMs as their primary weapon. See the M1134, the M901, or the B1 Centauro and the M1128 (infantry support vehicle, sure, but if we're calling a StuG a TD, then the Stryker with an old Abrams 105mm on it can be called a TD as well) for purely gun-equipped vehicles. I'd also say that multiturrets weren't necessarily a dead end, at least insofar as housing the auxiliary MG armaments of the vehicle, considering systems like CROWS and how basically every US MBT since the M48 has had either a fully rotating commander's MG cupola or a system for aiming and firing the commander's MG while buttoned up that could be convincingly called a turret, but that'd be nitpicking at that point I think.
@TheDumbdumb25

Not saying they csnt be used but the idea of a TD has changed drastically if not phased out since their prime.

@@The_whales I'm seeing a pattern here. An assault rifle is a "jack-of-all-trades" weapon that doesn't quite have the punch of a battle rifle, the ergonomics of a submachine gun nor the rate of fire of a light machine gun, yet in modern armies, it has largely pushed all three to the wayside, because having one gun that can do multiple things well enough turned to be much more practical in most situations than having three guns specialized for different things (of course, these still have specialist uses, with LMGs used for suppressing fire and BRs used as designated marksman rifles, for example). Tank design seems to have followed a very similar path. A modern MBT (Main Battle Tank) doesn't have the armor of a heavy tank, the speed of a light tank, nor the firepower of a tank destroyer, but it offers a good balance of all three traits to a point where it can fulfill all three roles well enough, making more specialized designs all but obsolete except for relatively niche use cases.

I mean it can be effectively argued the tank destroyer was very much replaced by the ATGM and ATGM armed vehicles, such as your given example of the German Weasel, serving the same role - light, quick, cheap, pack a punch, but can't take one. It seems more like that the tank destroyed and tankette, and even to some extent APC roles have been merged into the IFV - a cheap vehicle, that has an autocannon/low velocity cannon to support infantry, ATGMs to repel armor threats (or as a bunker busting weapon) and now also carries infantry to deploy.

4:57 re: Multiturrets. One of the problems I have with this line of reasoning is that it's often grouping specific unrelated technical issues together as though they are some inevitable feature of building anything other than the Leopard II MBT (and though you didn't mention it cost-benefit issues come up a lot as well) which is kind of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I often hear similar criticisms of electric tanks and other super-heavy tanks. Sure, the T-35 and the A1E1 did have a whole list of problems, but it's not like the medium cavalry tanks were perfect at the time either. I think that this is worth addressing in 2020 because it seems to me that there is a reluctance to put the commander's machinegun in a light turret on top of the the MBT turret because the maxim "multiturreted tanks don't work" is so pervasive. But the only real proof of this is that Soviet, German and British tank designers, operating on anemic defense budgets, with no clear doctrine, were unable to get them to work in the 1930s nearly a hundred years ago. There is also the fact that there was a largely ignored academic rivalry between cavalry and super-heavy tank thinking, that came to a head in 1940 with the battle of France, and then became rigidly in favour of cavalry tank doctrine in the aftermath of WW2 with the development of the Rommel Myth and other criticisms of Anglo-French doctrine made by English speaking authors (particularly Basil Liddel-Hart) which persisted well into the 90s and still, to an extent, today. You showed a picture of David Fletcher there, and if you read his writing on the subject he is very much of the opinion that Blitzkrieg (which wasn't actually German doctrine in 1940) was the "correct" way to use tanks, while the A1E1, TOG II, and Tiger (E) were the "wrong" way, and bases most of his analysis of super-heavy tank design on doctrinal criticisms about super-heavy tanks in general, rather than on specific things that didn't work but could have if they'd been done differently. So labeling the multiturreted super-heavy tank a "dead end" is, in my opinion, not a sustainable argument in light of digital fire control systems, unmanned turrets, greatly enhanced situational awareness, vastly increased component reliability, better training, and lighter stronger composite armour. It's only really true to say that it wasn't suitable for the battlefields of WW2, which means that by rejecting the idea on the basis of WW2 experience you make the same mistake that the super-heavy theorists in the lead up to WW2 made, which is fighting the last war instead of the next one. A historian can somewhat justify the claim "didn't work" but it's a big leap from that to "couldn't work" which is itself a long way off "can't work".

In a way, we still have multi-turret designs, in that there is usually some kind of very small rotating vision device on top of the main turret, or rotating cupola. Often, there would just be a rotating commander's cupola, and the idea of having a machine gun on that was played around with a lot even after WW2. You can still see 360 degree rotating machine gun mounts incorporated into the cupola on a lot of modern tanks, but it's usually not in a turret, but to be used with the hatch open rather than as a part of an actual closed mini-turret/ rotating cupola.

It was the designation for cavalry tanks, even ones that had cannons (as opposed to "char" which was for infantry tanks like the B1 bis). As far as I know that distinction ended after WW2. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stridsvagn_103 - Worth a mentioon, even thouh its not technically considered a tank destroyer, Sweden did employ a turretless MBT (considered such because of its role) with a very specific plan in mind, namely it would hide in woods and narrow passes, usually hull down, fire then flee. Later versions were also amphibious, to cross the many rivers and stuff, without the use of bridges. Think its since been replaced by the Leopard, but they used it for quite awhile

They fill the same role on paper, even if they operate very differently in practice(Hence Modern Tank Destroyer Vs Classic Tank Destroyer) 2. 1:29 The Soviets built it because they could. Literally. It was the way of showing: "we're capable of building big-ass tanks with lots of guns to be used as infantry support". Also, as far as I know the T-35s didn't take part on the Winter War, as they were on three "breakthrough tank" regiments, two stationed in Ukraine and one in the Moscow area (and they were already seen as obsolete).
@Nonsense010688

I think there is a debate whenever they fought or not base on what Mannerheim wrote in his book. Thou he wouldn't be the first to fail to tell apart tanks (not as easy you may think, if you don't have really pictures to compare the different tanks). They did fought in Barbarossa with the result to never be used again.
@podemosurss8316
5 жыл бұрын
@@Nonsense010688 The thing was that by the time of Barbarossa, they were obsolete, and a newer model based on it was unreliable. I mean, if we took the concept of the T-35 and designed it using 1941 standarts, it would be at least 4 times bigger than a KV-1, which means it would weight around 180 tonnes, having as armament 1x152mm Howitzer, 4x76mm F-34 guns and 5x7,62 MGs. To compare, the Panzer VIII Maus (which was actually produced) weighted 188 Tonnes and had a 128mm gun, with a 75mm gun as secondary weapon. And, as we all know, the Maus was extremely slow with a top speed of 12 Km/h, and was really not suited for anything other than being a sitting duck. Also, the kind of war the T-35 had been designed for no longed existed. You were no longer going to have two continuous frontlines with main masses of infantry to be supported by small units of tanks: by 1942 you had a war in which tanks were the sparhead. Actually the Soviets knew this and it's why they cancelled the multi-turreted designs in favor of the KV series, more suited to that kind of warfare, to act as the sparhead in a breakthrough.
@Nonsense010688

@@podemosurss8316 Well it would basically need to be the "Ratte" which truly deserves the title landship or better land submarine (it was suppose to use either 2 or 4 submarine engines, don't quite remember) and that was obviously a pipe dream. Also while you mention maus: has a secondary gun which for most of the war would be a completely acceptable main gun but no machine guns. But yeah multiple turrets are fun in sci fi or in games but in reality useless.

Tankettes were replaced by armored cars(yes armored cars did exist at the same time but the tankette role was consumed by them very quickly as everyone was using armored cars in some form or another even in the later periods of WW2 and even after), which had the same firepower and armor with the added advantage of speed and being comparatively cheap to produce, so not entirely a waste. There are even some cold war ones that existed like the British Fox, though I don't know if there are any 'traditional' ones still in service, as the most modern ones I know are more wheeled tank destroyers, I.E. the Centauro, or the Stryker MGS.
