I get so homesick for Ottumwa the way it was in 50's and 60''s......I left in 67 but wish I had not. Always ached to return " home". Now it's nothing like it was. Breaks my heart to drive down my old beloved Main Street. Thank you for a look back when Ottumwa was great.

1947 flood. I was 5 yrs old but remember wading to Agassiz for shelter. That's the Ottumwa I grew up in. Thursday.night stores openuntil 9 pm. Everyone went to town. It was crowded. Sidewalks and stores f ull of people shopping, visiting, such great time. CHRISTMAS WIth DECORATIONS, BELL RINGERS ON CORNERS, SHOPPERS, MUSIC PLAYING OVER PA SYSTEM, snow gently falling, every store window decorated on Main , Market and Second streets. Younkers and Sears with their elevators to second third floors. Old JC Penny's, Polings, Both Brodys', Maddens, Spurgeon, 3 Sisters, Osco Drug, Dupys, Herman's Cafe, pet Sgore, Camera Shop, JB Sax, Bookins Jewelry, O'Hara, Stevens Shoes, Browns Shoes, Beulers grocery, Spiegels , SHOE Shine Parlor on Market where my brother shined shoes for George and Pete the Greek owners. Maid Rite,..Lois Rae Dance Studio....I could go on and on but if you lived I n Ottumwa back then...add your business remembrances below. Lowenburg Bakery, Coca Cola bottling, Gibsons Bowling Alley.....now you list some.........

Amazing. Most of our population is elderly citizens. After morells packing plant closed in 1973, our town went to hell. All shops such as woolworth's kresgees, osco.drug, younkers, jcpenney, sears and many other stores downtown don't exist anymore, because oc morells closing. The elderly population hate shoppung here anymore. No where to go here now. Wal-mart and kohl's. That's. It. My grandma and my dad remember going downtown on thurs. Nights and shops were open until 9 pm.

Thursday nights were bustling with people. I worked at Woolworths at 17 years old 1960 for few years and Brody Store for Women..The Markett.....and ticket booth at Capital theater. It was wonderful downtown at Christmas with all stores windows decorated, Christmas decorations on street lit up, bell ringers on corners, Christmas Carol's played over City speakers on buildings, snow falling and town FULL of shoppers. And somewhere downtown you would see " Speed" dressed for the holiday with a big red bow on. I miss seeing Him.. Ottumwa Hometown Christmas. Beautiful memory. 🎄🌟🎀🌟🎄

Where was Iowa Steam Laundry & the house on frame 6.01?

It was on South Market at East 3rd Street. The west corner. A parking lot is there now. My mother worked there at the age of 12, she recalled that on Armistice Day (the first one) the city ordered all businesses closed so the workers could go to the celebrations. The manager refused to close as he had laundry from the hotels to finish. The sheriff showed up and threatened to padlock the laundry and then the workers got to go to the parade where a poor guy had volunteer to dress up as the Kaiser and be drawn down the street in a circus lion cage. He was pelted with everything that could be thrown.
