Tony was everything you wanted in a shortstop. He made every play defensively, even the ones nobody else could make. At the plate, he just did whatever it took to get on base. The best Blue Jay ever.

What a player! And very classy, too. I talked to him at a card show in Toronto in 2015. We must have chatted for about 15 minutes. It was great! #RIPLegend!

I was always a fan of Fernandez's casual batting stance, looking like he might drop the bat any second with two delicate a grip, then suddenly slapping the ball down the line for another triple. Of course, there's no way to know for sure, but the '87 Jays could have won it all if Bill Madlock hadn't taken Fernandez out. George Bell won the MVP but I always felt Tony was the real glue of that team.

I remember the warmups before games where he and Jesse would throw the ball back and forth. Jesse would rifle it to him and Tony would flick it back with ease. The injuries he had to overcome. His artistry and dedication to the game and the Jays. I moved away and returned for visits in ‘93 and made sure to catch as many jay games as I could. When Tony came to the plate for the first time I gave him a one person standing ovation. He was amazing.

A reminder that we’re only here for a short time. One of the best Jays of all time. A legend at shortstop. Still blown away by him winning 4 consecutive golden gloves in row. Amazing.😢
